Sleeping Dogs combat was one of the problems, it's the Arkham system again with a dedicated counter button that can be abused to the point of reducing any challenge, I had to let myself lose the Shaolin Showdown mission because it would have been near-endless otherwise since I just wasn't taking damage and after a few minutes I was getting bored.
Yakuza combat has its problems but it's a huge step up from Sleeping Dogs even in many of the weaker games.

Sleeping Dogs is somewhere between Arkham City and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood in terms of quality, it looks nice but it's got barely any depth.
I like both.

Thanks, SD has a little more freedom in terms of being able to perform grabs and charge certain attacks but it's basically, sure it looks nice but it's not that far off from being one long QTE.
If Sleeping Dogs should be compared to something it's Bully, not Yakuza.

Beaten the main story of Sleeping Dogs for the second time, the other day. Combat sucked, after a while. Grabbing is supposed to be the block breaker, but there's only like one enemy type that isn't immune to grabbing when they aren't almost dead. So you have plenty of fights where you are just waiting to be attacked.

if enemies don't have heat, you just lock them in an infinite combo
if they do have heat, you either a) play extremely passively which makes fights take literally forever or b) sip sip sip
The game tells you if an enemy blocks a lot you should either use a guard breaker, grab them or get behind them. Guard breakers tend to be too slow to combo out of, so all you'll do is push them back & force them to start blocking again. Grabbing them doesn't work on any heat enemies. Getting behind them just makes you get hit by an instant 180 counterattack or they just 180 block instantly

Hit yourself with a bat 5-20 times a day, and you'll get a similar experience.

I never said it was DMC or Virtual Fighter but it's very strong for realistic style action RPG.
The simple fact that more people unlock the extra grindie trophies
like Haruka's Trust than beat the quick to finish but hard Climax Battles shows that combat's skill ceiling is too high for a lot of players.

Yakuza combat is actually really good, its a shame the game has 0 difficulty but mechanically it has a lot of similarities to tekken minus launchers ie, its a shame the game never sets any kind of reward for using less health items or playing better overall so most casuals just mash square and heal, on the other hand sleeping dogs had that batman combat so casuals easily find the flashiest stuff better

That's correct though. You don't have to like Sleeping Dogs' combat to think this, Yakuza combat is just an even more braindead version of Musou combat with some QTE stuff thrown in.
