When are they going to fix it? It's literally shit right now
Smash Online
fuck you
fuck off sakurai you made 2003 tier online, its worse than sm4sh and you charge for it
it really is bad, but sadly I don't think it'll ever be fixed as the netcode would need to be rewritten, and likely a lot of the game's code as a whole. Plus, there's little incentive for them to fix it as they already have our money.
I hear this fucking constantly, and I also play smash almost every day. It confuses me, I don't have any issues with online at all. Here are my theories as to why.
1. I pay for the most expensive internet possible even though I live alone (perhaps the two are not very mutually exclusive), since nobody else uses my high speed internet and I plug my switch directly into my router, I experience the online in the most optimal way possible so it's fine for me.
2. Professional smash players and streamers constantly tell their audience of mostly impressionable children that online is terrible and since they all do it so much people just started believing it. They do this because it's the best way to save face when someone who literally devotes their entire life and career to ash brothers can still lose sets to people who clearly love and are passionate about the game but have not built their entire lives around it and just keep smash as a hobby.
Which is true? It's not a loaded question I honestly don't understand why people bitch so much about it.
>I don't have any issues with online at all.
I don't believe you. Laggy matches are a regular occurrence, usually where the person you're being matched with has poor ping or themselves has a terrible connection, but the games matchmaking system is a broken mess so will match you to that shit anyway from time to time. On top of this, getting incorrect rulesets is also a regular occurrence, I'd say nearly a third of my matches have a different ruleset to what I picked, despite picking the most common competitive rules that are basically default for most players. Hell, I even get matched in a free for all from time to time instead of 1v1's.
So, I don't believe for a second that you've had a flawless experience out of it. I call bullshit.
Find your local scene and play offline. If you want online play then play against local players, where both of you have LAN adapters in arenas. Quickplay and public arenas are and will always be cancer, no matter what nintendo does.
Did you play Smash 4? For Glory was bare bones but it had a couple of things over Ultimate, one it was a consistent rule set, no getting a stamina match or playing on a hazard stage, two you could rematch and character switch, this is a big one for me as in Sm4sh I use to like cycling between 4-5 characters but rematching to change the match up, you cant do that anymore.
Same for playing with friends, the arena system is shit. Having to put in a code and password every time rather than a lobby system, and for bigger groups too. During Smash 4 you could find a thread on Yea Forums and join the Yea Forumseekend tourny and play a bunch of matches at the same as others. Now you have to find a code, hope the lobby is not full, then wait 10 mins for any match. This is why you dont see Yea Forumseekend threads any more, even with Joker being out.
As more netcode, simply saying 'shell out 20 bucks for a Ethernet adaptor' is not good enough, the switch is a handheld console too, that doesn't solve the problem of poor code. Even stable matches have input lag and make some tech almost impossible, Shulk has some cool tech where he can store frames for mondao art dials, with input lag his is not possible online.
The fucking guys who made ARMS made a way better online system than this. Almost everything about Ultimate online is worse than 4 and it stings double as its no longer free.
It's actually terrible with a noticeable input delay and it's magnified by the fact that most online random players don't have an ethernet adapter.
Play Melee/Brawl or pretty much any Gamecube game over dolphin netplay with a friend who owns Smash ultimate. Then play them in Smash Ultimate. They're both using P2P connection so there's literally no excuse for how shit the latter is.
I have an Ethernet adapter and 120/120mbps connection. I have less than 5ms ping on any speed test you can think of. And smash ultimate is unplayable online.
It actually feels like my GameCube controller is broken. The amount of random shit that happens or things you don't want to do but can't avoid is so fucking infuriating. When Smash 4 came out I would play it for hours on end, win or lose. With Smash ultimate I get frustrated to the point of quitting after a handful of games.
There being no for glory mode, and no mode with standardized rules or stages, while still penalising you for quitting a match you don't want to play is fucking baffling.
Ultimate is a blunder. And that's without even getting into all the reasons it blows offline too
I bought Smash 4 the very day it came out and played the game actively throughout it's entire lifespan. I understand a lot of people preferred that online, and I am not going to say they are WRONG, because obviously it's just their opinion. That being said though, I think there's plenty of advantages to being able to make a moveset. And I definitely prefer playing on tri platform stages to playing every match on FD. I could go on but 4chans low character limit.
I do not have this problem and I have never had this problem playing smash ultimate. What's your GSP? I'm not trying to shit fling or start an argument, again this is honest curiosity. I think it's possible that your GSP is so low that you're mostly playing with casuals instead of competitive players, is that the case? I regularly have several hour long play sessions and it is almost always a 3 stock no items 1v1 on either battlefield or FD. Here's my character select screen as of like a week ago.
Online is great if your not a tryhard tourneyfag who goes into an autistic rage when one thing isnt their way of playing. For Fun sucked in 4 as no one plays 2 minute timed mode.
Now that I think about it, is there any way to go into your records in smash and see how many free for all matches you have played vs 1v1? I could take a picture of it right now, and for contexts sake, I have never had my preferred rules anything other than the competitive rules for the entire time the game has been out other than one time for like an hour when I had a friend over, that would be negligible when seeing the overall numbers.
None of those characters are difficult to make elite with under lag.
What's your point?
GSP doesn't really mean shit aside from the segregation of elite and non-elite smash, but even then you can get retards in elites with lag and/or dumb rules just the same. Really, you should be asking where people are located as the matchmaking relies on location above all else. If what you're saying is true, and you've had an apparent flawless experience, then you must be really lucky to be surrounded by people that aren't picking dumb rules and have as stable a connection as you do. For the majority of users, though, this is not the case.
It literally does not matter how much lag you play under if you just play campy projectile faggotry characters and camp under platforms on battlefield. Your opinion is moot.
>Search an Arena
>Stage: Choice
>Doesn’t tell you if Hazards are on or not.
>Risk to lose your spot in line if you check.
>Arenas still doesn’t tell you if Smash Meter or the Smash Ball is activated, like in Quickplay.
>Arenas still doesn’t tell you if items are on or not, like in Quickplay.
Never
I'm not even saying you guys are lying, but I would hope that you assume I'm not lying either. I've been curious about this for the last couple months, maybe I am just really lucky. I am in the tri-state region which is a pretty poppin area competitively but, I can't be sure. If you live in Kansas or Utah or something It stands to reason things would be much worse.
Campy projectile users like Incineroar, Bowser Jr. and Mii Swordfighter?
the mii swordfighter set I use doesn't have any projectiles. I use Ike side b and the neutral b flaming slash thing. It kills people at the ledge at like 60. It's nuts. People need to try other shit besides meme tornado.
Also, why are you so upset?
bruh if the issue was low GSP then surely you'd have ran into the same problem when you started playing before reaching elite GSP? so obviously that's not the reason people experience these issues
my local scene only plays boring compfag rules. shit sucks
Bowser Jr. all projectiles and shit. Swordfighter is but is also just a disjoin faggot, and all heavies take no skill to play online. Go make elite with fox or wario or something and then I'll take your input on the game's lag seriously.
I wish I lived where you live then, for me online is an absolute trainwreck and at least a third of the time the matches are a lagfest or have retarded rules. It's horrible, but this is how it is for most people which is why it's such a common complaint.
Also, can I just say that using a preferred rules system was a retarded idea from the get-go, they should've kept "for glory" mode from smash 4, it was fine and significantly better than what we have now. I'm so fucking sick of it instantly matching me to someone with completely different rules to me; it's honestly baffling, it's not like it takes ages to find a match then begrudgingly puts me in with some shitter, no, it instantly decides "lmao this ness player with HP 1 stock is a good idea". Seriously, what is wrong with the matchmaking in this game? it's the worst I've seen from any game ever.
I got into elite pretty much when the game launched and have hovered in that range this entire time. Even if I play a new guy I've never played before the GSP is still pretty high. I just assumed this has been the case for everyone who cares about competitive smash bros.
>Bowser Jr. all projectiles and shit.
LMAO
>Swordfighter is but is also just a disjoint faggot
oh NO NO NO NOOO
I respect your opinion but I think the option to play 1v1 matches on every possible stage, hazards on or off, with no items, all items, or whatever items you want, on stock mode or stamina mode (I think, right?) or time mode, is cool. Everyone really can play the game however they want, just not 100% of the time.
Now that I think about it I did get dragged into tons of 4 man free for alls when the game came out but ever since the first patch that stopped happening and almost never happens at all now.
>wahh I want to play party mode where RNG of item spawns determines the winner!!
>but I think the option to play 1v1 matches on every possible stage, hazards on or off, with no items, all items, or whatever items you want, on stock mode or stamina mode (I think, right?) or time mode, is cool
and I agree, but it should be a separate mode like Smash 4 did with the For Fun/For Glory split.
>Now that I think about it I did get dragged into tons of 4 man free for alls when the game came out but ever since the first patch that stopped happening and almost never happens at all now.
so you either exaggerated or outright lied when you claimed it as flawless. Brilliant.
Fuck him? Fuck you!
It was literally a problem for a very short amount of time months ago, and hasn't been an issue since. I forgot about it. Chill. And I would definitely not say it's "flawless", but it's not to the point where I think the better player doesn't still win almost every time. I don't really feel the lag and I've certainly never felt the need to bitch about it online, though it seems popular to do so. It's entirely possible that I just don't notice it as much as you guys do, there isn't anything wrong with that. I'm just saying as a fellow consumer of the same product I just do not have the same problem or do not seem to be bothered by it to the same degree.
As someone with half the cast in Elite including Fox and Wario, you have no idea what you are talking abour
>literally shit
LITERALLY. SHIT.
Is it user? IS IT?
your first mistake is playing smash to win. It's a fun party game, not a tryhard fighting game. I play to have fun, not cutting 90% of the content out of the game
it feels like you came here to vaguely gloat rather than actually discuss the issues the online clearly has, even by your own admission (but for some reason you don't seem to want to admit to the obvious flaws it has even when it affected you in the past), you should get your head out your ass and recognize that the online has problems that people are rightfully complaining about. Just because it's still winnable does not make it any less shit when the matchmaking fucks up, and it fucks up far more often than it should for the majority of players. If you compare the online experience in smash with quite literally any other competitive online game then it becomes clear why people absolutely hate smash ultimate's online - it does nearly everything wrong.
Not the guy you're replying to but my experience with the online is also extremely consistent. I've literally never once been matched with a free for all and maybe 1 in 20 matches has items or smash balls on, which is frustrating sure, but ultimately not that big if a deal imo.
I also don't use a direct plug in to a router and lag happens but it's very infrequent, majority of matches I play online are very smooth. I really think you guys are exaggerating or have bad internet or something
If you think I'm gloating than you're really, really sensitive man.
Also you're really overstating how much the online "affected" me when we are literally talking about the game a few days after launch and then since then it has been smooth sailing to the point where I literally forgot about it.
>If you compare the online experience in smash with quite literally any other competitive online game then it becomes clear why people absolutely hate smash ultimate's online - it does nearly everything wrong.
I have played enough games online to know that any competitive community finds ample reasons to bitch about the online or ranking system in any game they play for any genre ever. People on the internet love to bitch.
Nope. You're lying. :^)
Why would I lie about this? Just to dunk on a random stranger online?
sounds like a cope over being bad to me. you can tourneyfag and still enjoy FFA matches, if anything high level FFA is more fun since you can catch multiple people in a single combo
>Buy Smash Ultimate
>Play World of Light for an hour
>It's shit
>Spend like 2 hours unlocking all characters
>Really annnoying
>Check out other single player content
>It's all shit
>Play online
>Netcode is shit and Sakurai the retard decided to rank you for everything you do and not create playlists which have been a thing in multiplayer games for decades
>All the ideas from Smash 4 that might have been good with a little bit of tweaking (Custom Moves, Mario Party mode, etc.) were removed
Last time I played this was Christmas when some friends came in from out of town, haven't even bothered to download Joker. I legit wish that this game was a port of Smash 4 with the updated gameplay mechanics/balancing, because that was a WAY more complete video game than what we've got now.
I havent gotten any of those matches since the first online update either though, the most wacky matches I ever get are 2 stock 3 minutes against super-heavies
you were awfully keen to post GSP even though it has no relevance to the online experience in the game, and GSP in general isn't even a proper ranking system as it doesn't work the way you probably think it does.
> and then since then it has been smooth sailing
there you are downplaying things to heavily imply it's flawless again which contradicts what you said in an earlier post about still having endure 4-player FFA matches on rare occasion.
>I have played enough games online to know that any competitive community finds ample reasons to bitch about the online or ranking system in any game they play for any genre ever.
This may be true, however you're side-stepping the problem with this statement as it doesn't change how poor the online system is for ultimate even comparably to other online games, which was my point.
Customs in 4 were a headache to use and nobody and I mean NOBODY liked the Mario Party mode
you likely live in an area where most people around you have decent internet and sensible rules, some of us aren't so lucky.
>you were awfully keen to post GSP even though it has no relevance to the online experience in the game
except it has everything to do since better players tend to have better connections and take the game seriously enough to fall for that Lan wire thing
>isabellefag
>retarded
it checks out
higher GSP rarely correlates to better players aside from like the top 50 in elites, since GSP is awarded for all play styles rather than being separated - you can (and I've seen this before) get a spamming Ness in HP battles scrubbing his way into elites. But you're right that there's significantly fewer laggy players in elites.
You are simply lying.
Did anybody even use customs in tr4sh?
80% of the time they were useless sidegrades, 15% were downgrades, and only 5% were upgrades.
>you were awfully keen to post GSP even though it has no relevance to the online experience in the game
I literally outlined in that post why GSP could very well be relevant to your online experience. If your GSP sucks you're probably playing with casuals and children who have no control over how good/bad their internet is and don't care. I'm still going to go with my theory that you're just overly sensitive and angry you suck at the game. I'm perfectly aware of how GSP works. Even though the system isn't perfect it's still fucking obvious that someone with 4.5 mil is going to play completely differently than someone with 3 mil. People keep sucking For Glory's dick but it genuinely took fucking forever to find a decent player in Smash 4. At least GSP can get people with approximately similar skill levels to match up with each other. Even if you don't like quickplay you can make a 1v1 arena and fight people in there as much as you like.
>Even though the system isn't perfect it's still fucking obvious that someone with 4.5 mil is going to play completely differently than someone with 3 mil
in my experience there's little to no difference between those players
Well then that 3 mil GSP player won't have 3 mil for long then, his will go up. That's how it works.
NOOOOOOO DONT CRITICIZE NINTENDO ON THE NINTENDO BOOOOOOOOOARD NINTENDO IS MY FRIEND DONT TALK BAD ABOUT MY FAVORITE CORPORATION NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
unless that player is unlucky and encounters laggy matches, and I've legitimately played against 3 mil players that were better than 4 mil players before. There's something seriously wrong with the GSP ranking system. Remember when I brought up a Ness 1 stock HP scrub? they were around 4.2 mil and had no clue how to play the game, basically spamming and were easy to fight. Sums it up, really.
The idea is that overtime things average out. I'm sure over the hundreds of matches I've played I've won matches I shouldn't have won and lost matches I shouldn't have lost. Hell, SDing at 0% is just something that can always happen in smash, even in a lag free match with a good ruleset. At the end of the day, it's still very much negligible in the grand scheme of things.
Plus, there's lots of stuff you simply can't know about the person you're fighting in smash. I played a few matches last week with a fever and while I only played four or five games before giving up because it was obvious I couldn't play in that state, I'm sure the people I was fighting had no fucking idea how I ever got to where I was at. You could be playing against a good player who just happens to be drunk. You could be playing against a good player's little brother who snuck on his system. Hell, that Ness player you're talking about COULD be a good player, maybe he was just fucking around.
>make arena with your own fair rules
>someone joins
>play smash
god this is hard
>play random stages with all legal stages and some few barely disqualified stages
>any stage that is even slightly different like the new Persona stage or Halberd shows up
>they SD
nigger you weren't going to win anyway play the fucking match, christ I'm mad
NOOOO YOU'RE NOT SUPPPOSED TO AKNOWLEDGE THE SOLUTION NO DELETE THAT POST NOW NOW NOW REEEEEEEEEEEE ITS NOT FAIR ITS SHIT! SHIT!
I have some oddball stages in my list for variety and spice and I've never had anyone SD. Guess I'm lucky.
although I am hypocritical, whenever I see Lylat, I shut my game off, regardless of whether hazards are on or not. Too much PTSD from Project M and Tr4sh
NONONONONO
zoomer spotted, play arenas like someone with a fully developed frontal lobe
>The idea is that overtime things average out
in principle, yes, but in practice it doesn't really play out that way as GSP fluctuates far too quickly and easily in a way that makes very little sense. Seriously, does fucking anyone know how GSP ranking actually works? It appears completely arbitrary how much it decides to rank you up/down after a match. The matchups also appear incredibly arbitrary, too, sometimes it matches you with a similar GSP player, other times it'll match you up with something with significantly lower GSP (which just seems cruel to the other player, like no shit you'll win why even match me up with this? bonus points if it decides to match me against the same person again a couple games later)...I truly don't understand what GSP is trying to achieve.
>make arena with your own fair rules
>nobody joins for like an hour
y-yay?
Netcode aside, my biggest problem with Smash's online is the only characters people want to play in a 70 man roster are fire emblem characters and Ness.
If you set your arena to 2 players, you should get someone to join within a minute or two.
Right. You don't understand it, so it's bad.
It's some dumbass system trying to emulate ELO without being ELO and with some fuckstupid arbitrary numbers.
>Lose a match
>Lose ~1,200,000 GSP
>Win a match
>Gain ~300,000 GSP
It pisses me off. I hate it. I prefer playing in Arenas.
>Rainbow Cruise and Skyloft
My nigger
I haven't seen FE characters, since Launch. All I see are Links, Samus, Snake and Ness
>implying you understand it
nobody understands GSP, I'm convinced even Sakurai doesn't know how it's supposed to work and I get the feeling it's genuinely bugged.
You can't change characters between matches and arenas only have one match going at a time when ARMS already did that concept better. Online is shit and you're delusional.
this, the reverse can also happen and I still haven't seen any reasoning or correlation over why. It's like the game rolls a dice of how much to reward or deduct for no reason whatsoever. I could absolutely stomp someone but gain peanuts, but barely win in a crutch and gain huge points out of it. It makes no sense whatsoever, it doesn't at all seem to take into account your skill throughout the fight, it doesn't seem to care about win or lose streaks, it may as well be completely random.
literally every other fg has a better ranked system
does smash 5 have the custom move choices that 4 did? feel like i have money burning in my pocket and want to spend it
Not to mention unlocking them all was a complete pain in the ass.
For miis yes and not anyone else.
aw man
Fucking COD and Clash of Clans has a better ranking system than this shit. They need to shamelessly just copy it, I wouldn't even care because it's 50x better anyway.
