I maybe commission 1-2 times a year. The second to last one was amazing. Found a literal who on HF and commissioned him to draw a literal who character as he actually knew about this character. Art was far beyond what I was expecting. Paid a little more than he asked, wanted to know if he should refund. I said no, it's extra for a great job. Last one though ruined commissioning for me for awhile. Great previous work. Paid a decent amount, got a real funky pose, wacky faces and no background. Thanks.

Hey, invoices request tips on upfront payment. Honestly don't really think commissioners should do or be expectant on getting tipped on contractual commissions. I'll pay what they ask, but maybe leave the tip jar for a side thing. I've seen some artists get backhanded snippy about not getting tipped when the payment model of tipping in commissions isn't the same as a waiter/server since paying for the meal covers the expense whereas a private contractor already gets the full payment and doesn't have to split cost with staff, etc.,
Sorry to ramble, but I've seen it get compared to the restaurant industry unfairly.

Agreed here, if I commission someone, I want to be aware of what to expect. I know that some artists go on about how they don't want fixed prices and instead want a price base don hours spent. and that is fine, as long as they're professional enough to know their own skills and how long they expect to take on something so they can give me a predetermined price on something. There's been one guy I commissioned who would hint at me for wanting a tip after finishing my commission, and honestly it feels very unprofessional and awkward.

I have an artist friend/associate that I recently started commissioning and he's generally satisfied to charge a fixed price, it also helps he takes self interest in the ideas I pitch so really I'm just paying him to draw what we both like.
Other artists, I'll pay what they ask and if they consider raising prices, it's fine as long as I still get them to draw what I want and honor the 50/50 rule to break things down a bit. I mean in the end, I value ability and skill if they can be utilized for things I want but at the same time diligence isn't a guarantee on my end given subjects I like, so while I don't mind paying in a slightly higher commission bracket on a figure/character+bg these days, I also would like some care put into my ideas or at least be sure the artist is willing to tackle subject matter that is unusual but appealing to me.
