According to the DK Vine podcast, they had a source that stated that Nintendo was completely blindsided by his popularity in the Smash Ballot, and that while the character was considered 'retired' before, they intend to utilize him in the future. According to the same source, Retro wanted to be the ones to bring him back and had asked to use him in the Switch port of Tropical Freeze, but this was rejected as Nintendo wanted to use Smash to relaunch the character.

My problem with Smash's portrayal is that he doesn't look nearly as unhinged/psycho as he did in the DKC games.
I think he's great, but I wish they had kept that aspect of the character

It's a load of crock, but ultimately it does work. Shitton of people who don't play DK games love King K Rool just from smash alone, so it can segway into convincing people to buy the next DK game. Appeal to the masses at the expense of the dedicated

I know it's not quite the same, and it was stated before that he'd not be in the next Prime, but do you think Ridley will show up somehow in 4? He must have done well in the ballot too and even popped up in Returns.

He was killed off by his author, Doyle, in "The Final Problem" but fans and companies kept badgering him to bring the character (companies in particular offered him ludicris sums to write another story). People had "bring back Sherlock" clubs and whatnot. First Doyle just wrote a story or two that took place before the final story, but in The Adventure of the Empty House it was revealed Holmes faked his death. Doyle didn't like the character but he was incredibly popular.

Doyle killed him off and fans bitched so he brought him back. I have no idea about Ridley in Prime for, for exactly the reasons you said. They claimed he wouldn't be there, but he also had a pretty positive response, and development did just restart, so I wouldn't rule it out.
