I just played through sonic 1 for the first time and it seems like almost all of the levels don't actually want you to go fast. Like you said, the only zones that were any fun were green hill and star light.

Copy pasting springs isn't good level design user, it's fucking abysmal. It's easily the worst sonic game by an enormous margin.

"Soul" is a subjective and meaningless buzzword, and using it as an argument makes you sound like a brainlet.
That said, despite the problems with stage design (especially in Marble Zone), it has some of the most iconic visuals and music in the classic series.

Sonic 1's levels aren't bad in and of themselves, they're bad because they don't compliment the character's abilities.

CD's levels are bad both because they don't compliment Sonic's abilities, but are also confusing to navigate, have little cohesion, and aren't good platforming levels in general.

Not really. The design here is varied. Green Hill, Spring Yard, and Star Light are filled to the brim with sloped areas. Marble has its fair share as well (though they're much more subtle and subdued). Labyrinth (and Scrap Brain Act 3) is pretty much entirely blocky, but even then, there's nothing bad about that. Being 100% blocky would make the game only as bad as Super Mario Bros. (85), which is still a fantastic game. Being almost entirely blocky would make the game only as bad as Super Mario Bros. 3 (88), which is also still a fantastic game.

It's a video game. Facing, and overcoming, adversity is integral to the point.
