DRAGON QUEST 11

This is about to be my first Dragon Quest game. What am I in for? And what is the best DQ game? I love JRPGs but Dragon Quest has always been off my radar for some odd reason

This is only my 3rd game after 6 and Heroes so I'm in the same boat. Let's jump into it & find out

>what is the best DQ game
V

XI is cool I guess.

5/11

I'd say 11>5>8 as a series noob, 11 just benefits so much from the increase in production values over time

I see 5 is the hot pick. Is V the DQ equivalent of Final Fantasy 7?

Attached: cloud smash ultimate.png (960x1026, 719K)

Best are V, VIII and III
Hope you'll like XI. I gave up halfway.

It's just a really unique game. You can have any monster as a party member and the game goes through 3 stages of life of the protagonist (child/adult/old man)

It's a good game. Out of the ones I've played, I would say
5>11>8>9=7>4>6
4 and 6 are worth playing, but only if you like the other games above it. Also 7 requires a massive amount of patience because it has a slow and long start.

But I feel that FF7 is overrated and that DQ5 is actually great. I would say that DQ8 is more akin to FF7 since both are overrated. I still love DQ8 though.

5,8,11 are the canon competitors for the top spot, at least in the west (japan loves 3 for historical reasons i think)

VIII gets dicksucked wayy too hard, is a good game but VII and IV far superior.

Which version of 5 is the best?

XI is absolutely great. Hope you're ready for an almost 100 hour adventure.

DS

3 is a legit great game
t. played DQs 1-6 during a stay in a mental hospital on my phone
the only problem with playing it in the west is that the version with the best translation (mobile) lacks animated sprites and a minigame, while the most complete version (SNES one) only has a fan translation availible (which I emulated after getting out of the loony bin).

It's unique, because you don't play as the hero, but you play as one of his party members who has a personal beef with the big bad guy.
It is also unique that you follow him from childhood to adulthood.
You don't actually meet the prophesied hero untill way later into the game.

The most generic JRPG ever, but it's a really good and well made generic JRPG. The game feels charming and non of the characters are cunts. Dick-ass theif isn't an edgelord and the women aren't bitchy.

Most Westerners only played 8 they haven't tried the true kino quest that is V and III

>Hope you'll like XI. I gave up halfway.
Care to say why? Also thanks everybody for the feedback in this thread. I was always interested in DQ but I just never made the effort to play it. I guess once I beat 11 I'll play 5 or should I play 5 first?

Attached: 1539304198812.jpg (1400x873, 820K)

If you're getting the PS4/PC version right away I'd say just play XI first. But if you're waiting for XI S I'd say playing V would be nice to get into the series.

He probably gave up because Dragon Quest is a true classical jRPG. Defeating the ULTIMATE FINAL BOSS usually requires some grind that the game expects you to do. This is also true for DQXI, although I'm not sure to what extent, because I just grinded to Lv. 99 anyway for the achievements.

8 has the nice orchestrated music and the voice acting is a lot of fun
Doesn't really matter. If you're not waiting for the Switch version of 11 then you should prefer the PC version to the PS4 version, because it has a mod that makes most of the music orchestrated

5 is THE DQ game when it comes to story. If you're planning to play it I'd recommend playing 4 first, it's also a good game and it sets up some plot points from 5, since 4-6 form loosely connected Zenithian trilogy. The best 4 version is the mobile one, since western DS release removed party chat function for some reason.
1-3 form a whole lot more closely connected Erdrick trilogy. Also when you get to the end of 11 and wonder what the fuck that is - it's a reference to 3. You'll know what I'm talking about when you get there.

Not him, but I know it's super long, even for JRPG standards, so for some people it might be a bit much.

For me personally, Its meaty, but I like its meatinessa lot. A lot of longer games are just padded, but the length is actually filled with actual worthwhile stuff to do. Don't let its length intimidate you if length does. Dragon Quest VII is way longer anyway.

a long and boring game that has events play out at a snails pace.

play dragonquest 3 and 5, they are better

Before you start, here is a pointer: Put on the Draconian Quest 'Strong Monsters' mode before you start. You can cancel it at any time, but may regret not having it on later. I personally think it enhanced my experience. I'm only 1/3 through the game though. I'm really enjoying it as my first DQ game (if you don't count Builders).

Beware that DQ is a nostalgia driven franchise, and that goes for everything. The soundtrack is not orchestrated, it's synths.

There's an orchestra mod for PC however.

5's story definitely would have suffered if stretched past 30 hours, because there would have to be more chapters/towns where *your character* doesn't change, just the townspeople or whatever

I don't mind DQ 11 being a generic JRPG. It might actually be nice to play a generic old school JRPG in 2019. I will say that Persona 5 did spoil me because that game has so much flash and style but I'm sure I'll still love DQ 11 if it's a game I can just play for hours on end and be so in love with the atmosphere and world

XI is the easiest JRPG in that aspect as as soons as you get to the third act, around level 50, you can leap into level 99 in around half an hour

took me 2 hours but alright. As I said, I only did it because of the achievements and to unlock every power. I heard you can defeat the final guy at level 80 or 70 anyway. Levels certainly didnt seem to matter much at that point, I still got nearly 2 shot by it.

I've still not completed DQ11. I just found is so damn boring.

I loved DQ5 and Monster Joker 2, but all the others I've tried have just been naff

DQ Heroes 2 is also pretty good

Ahem
FUCK MONSTERS

Attached: Drunk Delinquent dot jaypeg.jpg (650x500, 112K)

Did you use the sword as an item?

Yes, on my 3rd or 4th try, cause I kept using the sword I had equipped instead of the item in my inventory.

XI is long as fuck so I can see why it turns people off like 100+ hour long.
It was still very good though.
It kinda felt like the last airbender as in the reincarnation of some legendary heroic figure with weird spirutual powers You are on the run with your merry band of colorful friends from this big bad empire, but you also try to complete your objective to fully realize your power whike helping people along the way.
DQV story on the otherhand is more a personal story where you watch someone grow up, marry and have kids over the course of the story while also going through some guts from berserk tier suffering.
So what do you want 100+ hours of some comfy swashbuckling adventures with your mates or do you want a more 20-30 hour personal story where you watch someone grow up, get married and have kids together with all the suffering he goes through to get to those points.
DQ XI gets pretty fucking dark too make no mistake, but DQV is a bit more to the point and you are mostly on your own untill third act.

>Before you start, here is a pointer: Put on the Draconian Quest 'Strong Monsters' mode before you start.
What exactly is that? Is it like a hard mode? Sorry for my ignorance I know virtually nothing about Dragon Quest or this game. I didn't do any research I just came to Yea Forums first because despite the shitposting, I can get some actually good and honest feedback

Attached: 1511580044458.jpg (270x447, 18K)

Draconian quest is a hardmode added in the english release.
You get a few options to make shit harder like less EXP, stronger monsters, not being able to buy equipment and other shit.
You can turn off any of the selected options whenever you feel like it, but you can't turn on any of the options.

If you want to experience DQ in the most "proper" way I'd say start with the very beginning, the first game and work from there in chronological order. Get mobile or snes remakes for the first 3 games. 1 is a very basic game, but it's also short and inoffensive, you can complete it in a couple of evenings and it sets up a lot of stuff for the future games. 2 is the only real stinker in the series, it vastly broadens the scale of the game, but has some hiccups along the way. There's no shame in using a walkthrough for this or the first game by the way, some of the shit is super hidden. 3 is the shining crown jewel of the early DQ, play it and you'll know why the whole Japan sucks Erdrick's dick. Also playing 1-2 first makes the twist at the end of 3 feel amazing.
4 was the first shift towards more plot oriented storytelling, it's a pretty fun game overall, even if it drags a bit at the beginning. Also it has a very divisive western localisation. It begins the Zenithian trilogy. Get the mobile version, it's the same as DS one except with party chat.
5 is the most plot heavy DQ out there and among other things it served as direct inspiration for the entire Pokémon series.
6 is ok, which makes it feel kinda disappointing compared to the greatness of 5. It also takes the vocation system from 3 and manages to screw it up. Not a bad game, but a bit of a red headed stepchild of Zenithian trilogy.

No worries, the Draconian Quest stuff is kind of misleading with its name. They are a list of switches you can turn that make the game harder. One of those is Strong Monsters or something to that effect, which boosts the monsters attack and defense (maybe other things). It makes the game a little more challenging. The thing is you can't turn it on anytime you want, you have to start with it on when you create the new file. You can however turn it off anytime you want. You'll know when you have it on since it will appear in the options menu. I tried playing with it off the first time and thought it was too easy. When I turned it on the monsters became more threatening imo. Again you can turn it off anytime, but can't turn it on unless you start with it on when making your file.

I had to quit after 20 hours, the music is just so fucking repetitive.

it's a great game that non-weebs should enjoy, it is very light on modern anime tropes (as it should be) and tries to go heavier on that 90's nostalgia.

It's a great jrpg. Best is probably 5, 8, 11. I personally love 4 but most don't say it's the best.

Attached: 1536360453870.png (1336x1720, 779K)

dragon quest 11 is piss easier and western audience generally prefers hard games, so they added a hard mode to the western release.

stronger monsters is mandatory, less exp from weak monsters is strongly recommended.

You can definitely beat him at 99 without using the sword if you have a solid strategy, it's actually balanced pretty well in that respect

youtube.com/watch?v=3QBvgHTqYoE
Never played DQ myself, but I really like this video as a primer.
>inb4kotaku

VIII is the DQ equivalent of FF7. It's the game that brought a lot of people into the series and gets a lot of extra credit because it's the one recognized by people who've never played any other, or even any game including it. And they're both good titles regardless of that which get too much flak from the die-hards.

why does the narrator sound like batman?

>Defeating the ULTIMATE FINAL BOSS usually requires some grind that the game expects you to do.

I beat the game on harder monsters with less exp from weak monsters turned on, at no point did I feel like I needed to grind to beat any of the bosses except dora-in-grey. I will say that the end-game content has a very large number of side-quests that work to beef up your party, without those the final boss would have been impossible yes.

Avoid VII at all costs

Oh yeah, and if you are a completionist like me then I believe there are no items, weapons, or enemies that are restricted past a certain point. Even if an enemy isn't available anymore (at one point stronger enemies replace weaker ones) then the weaker ones get added to your bestiary. That's my understanding at least.

Also is unironically a good video to watch too.

there's nothing wrong with VII aside from taking a while to actually start

Attached: 1542790090099.jpg (750x820, 153K)

Oh okay thanks guys. DQ 11 is really that easy without the hard mode?

It's pretty easy even with hard mode to be honest. You might also want to pop that "no exp from weaker monsters" or you'll accidentally overlevel and faceroll until the next road-bump boss.

It's pretty easy (at least before the postgame) but it's not braindead-easy, some bosses gave me trouble. One thing that's relevant is that it's easy to avoid most random encounters, so you can kind of pace yourself however you want. If that sounds like garbage to you, probably turn on stronger monsters and the anti-grind "no exp from weak monsters" one

>r you'll accidentally overlevel and faceroll until the next road-bump boss

What's that mean? Over levelling can actually be bad? do they match your level?

Why the fuck would you get it when the enhanced Switch version is coming out in a few months?

no, play the PS1 version of 7 and enjoy the greatest experience ever put on disc

Hijacking this thread to ask: should I emulate DQ8 with a PS2 emulator or Citra? Or should I play it on my 3ds which I never take out of the house anymore? Logic would dictate that the remake would probably be better but I'm not sure what to do.

Attached: dragonquestviii-1280-1484052894284_1280w.jpg (1280x720, 389K)

I think that user meant like if you over-level, the field enemies will be too easy. The boss battles almost always require a smart strategy and planning though so you usually can't just grind and beat them easily.

No, it's not bad, it's just kinda boring. Bosses are difficulty spikes and everything inbetween can be challenging and fun, but when you're overleveled (which can easily happen when you're facing a strong boss and are trying to beef up before fighting him) you might as well use autocombat. Which is actually a good point for a newbie - autocombat is a thing and it's meant to be used, just make sure to use proper tactics settings. If you're a grind fiend you might only want to turn it off during bosses.

play it on the 3ds

Attached: 1547836873466.jpg (933x540, 956K)

Oh ok thanks, that's actually pretty smart. Is there any romance or sexuality in Dragon Quest games?

Not in fanservicey Bioware way, but yeah, it's a big fucking point in 5 (you get a wife and kids) and you get a cute brit waifu in 11 too.

>cute brit waifu in 11 too
>cute
Go to bed Gemma. It's late.

Oh, also puff-puffs. They've been there since game 1.

Attached: 1540138333221.png (536x412, 361K)

kinda but not fanservice at all, in fact it felt like 11 went out of it's way to avoid it, to the point that the femme fatale fanservice character had a sibling relationship with the MC.

Couldn't dislike her after she said "what if I tumble and do myself a mischief?" in the beginning. What a cutie.

The only thing ps2 has going for it are better load times and way better graphics if you have a hacked 3ds.
If you don't have hacked 3ds, the ps2 version will have uncensored outfits and an orchestrated soundtrack instead of midi/synth shit.
3ds also has 2 new party members, an alternate ending where you can marry the redhead in your image and some other added story stuff and dungeons.

>sexuality
no, aside from some light-hearted references like "puff-puff"
>romance
for the most part the games push you with childhood romances even if they suck and there are far better options, 5, 8 and soon to be 11 give you choices though

Attached: Dragon Quest basically.png (2518x1024, 168K)

Yes but it's not a trashy series at all, it's one of the least trashy jrpgs you can play

She's a just a good friend. Serena is the true best waifu.

You know Bianca is gonna be the canon wife in DQ 5 movie brah
CHILDHOOD FRIEND POWER SUPREME

don't listen to this betatester
It can tedious for newplayers.

Last I heard, it was going along smoothly, but then again I heard that on /vg/ with no source. Same for Slime Mori Mori 3. Either it's pure bullshit, or the team is trying to stay low until the project is done in fear of a CnD.

be careful what you say, I hear that a certain group of individuals get pissed off when they someones says Serena is best waifu

member that time we went hunting ghosts as kids, hubby?

Reminder.

Attached: Best wife.jpg (827x832, 600K)

The movie is interactive, the viewers will make the choice.
If they have taste they'll pick Debora.

>makes you sleep on the floor but then comes and sleeps with you on the floor anyway

She made the game really fun. Picking between her and Bianca is really difficult

>roleplaying as a monster tamer so hard you marry one

Good taste

Attached: DQ5 Deborah.jpg (1000x2582, 351K)

i can't wait for the re-remake of V where you go on a ____busting adventure with Nera and Debora

Attached: 1555238441424.jpg (553x600, 87K)

Debora won't be in the movie at all

dlc

Attached: 1554641701803.jpg (1000x1000, 375K)

A good rpg's, but a great entry point for Dragon Quest. You'll find it doesnt do anything very unique in terms of the JRPG genre, but what it does do is incredibly well polished and worthwhile. Enjoy!

Just finished DQ7 ask me anything.

I have been playing the entire series for the past 6 months or so

Attached: dq77.png (2160x720, 1.25M)

Is Maribel mean?

Were you as disgusted by the plot twist about the hero's real parents as I was?

It was so stupid and unnecessary

Are you taking a break after?

Not mean. Tsundere.

Attached: 1382771941646.jpg (850x806, 275K)

Well I’ve heard she’s mean

Shes my future wife
Yeah it was kinda shit since I like Pollock a lot but what can yah do. Time travel was cool
Nah probably gonna head straight in to 8 soon. Gonna see if citra vers is any good first

Attached: dq72.png (2160x720, 1.08M)

Actually the thing that REALLY fucking sucked for me is that kiefer never showed up after he left you for a hoe, what the fuck dude at least have a older kiefer come around and fuck shit up

Nope he’s too busy nutting inside his Scythian dancer waifu

I thought sharkeye was the grandfather not the parent

Yeah they don't really do much with that other than the grave you find in the present. It might have been cool to have him die offscreen in battle to a monster you fight later on in the game too

To be fair the game is a VI-esque remake.
They probably tried to redo the Tania (or whatever her name was) plotpoint late in development.

Hey it's that one girl. What's her name again? Emma?

>27 hours save of DQ V got fucking corrupted

Attached: 8bc.jpg (394x631, 71K)

>trying for tokens in casino
I'm going to have to leave this shit on overnight arent I.

You can get a roulette jackpot fairly quickly if you know what to do

I dont believe thats available to me yet. Im just after Octagonia.

I'd fuck the noble dragon

Yeah, it's way off. You get more casino stuff unlocked during Act 2, it's woven into the main story so you won't miss it. Act 1 prizes are not going to help much right now.

V > VIII = III > IX > the rest

Fuck I meant XI not IX

Very good. I would put XI in front of VIII and VII after IX.

Gemma is your true love

Attached: 1553285075616.png (1920x1080, 3.55M)

In terms of my full ranking it goes V > VIII = III > XI > VII > VI > IX > IV > I > II

We'll never get X. And I wish we had some actual
Decent DQ figures. I'd get Jessica, Jade, Alena, Maya, and Ashlynn in a heartbeat.

Did the hero even know the princess in 8? I mean, [Jessica] is clearly the superior choice just based on the amount of time we see them together.

well i fucked that up.

anyway i choose love interests based on "does the MC even know this bitch?"

I did basically the same thing last year, (re)played every game in the series except 2 and 9, as well as the three DQMJ games.
After having done at least two playthroughs of every mainline game, I still don't get why people like V so much. The monster catching is nice but I prefer actual party members like in 4 or 11.

well yeah she talks to him all throughout the game in dreams and everything, I really don't like the jessica ending because I feel like I'm cucking the hero out of his actual waifu, and cucking the princess out of her husbando

I mean wasn't it stated that him and Medea knew each other as kids?

>I still don't get why people like V so much.
Because the story is the best.

I felt V was as long as it needed to be, whereas something like XI, which I did like a ton, dragged towards the end.

I guess it is pretty moving and the characters are endearing, but I felt much more involved in VIII's long journey kind of deal, or VII's small villain-of-the-week format which I found very entertaining. Guess it's just a matter of preferences.

Attached: 1434870713-349.jpg (640x640, 77K)

DQ11 is like if they took an NES era DQ with modern gameplay/production values. If that sounds good to you then you'll like it.

Attached: 1526515793288.gif (1260x1179, 464K)

This is what DQ8 looks like in citra, not sure if I like pcx2 better or not. 30fps is kinda a bummer

Attached: dq81.png (1440x720, 1.07M)

I found the "wedding" in DQ11 hilarious. I figured you'd have to rebuild cobblestone and then you'd get the chance through dialogue with Gemma but nah your main man Drustan's got ya.

I love VII (VIII not so much but that's more to do with how slow navigating the game is in full scale 3d compared to the other dragon quest games than because of its story) but V really is unique in the way its story is told.

graphic comparison

Attached: dq8ps21.png (1920x1080, 1.81M)

Pic related.
That's why having new choices doesn't mean much.

Attached: 1539223599071.jpg (220x229, 11K)

Yeah that's why I'm asking. I don't remember a hell of a lot about it.

Bought it for PC on release and hadn't played a DQ before either. I wasn't prepared for all the comfy: it's very basic, but it seems they went over all that basic stuff 10 times with shiny wax. Great, great game, but now that I've played it, I don't think I'll need to play another DQ, I'd rather play something else than the same thing again with alterations in characters and story.

I lost my PC to my GF too when I bought this for about 180 hours... She loved it.

Attached: 20180923194412_1.jpg (1920x1080, 425K)

Wtf is citra

3ds emulator for pc

Why is the dq5 ps2 remake 2.5d instead of full 3d like dq8

You are just like me. I first DQ game is Builders and my first DQ proper was XI.
