I wouldn't expect much to be cut down unless the next game goes into a radically different direction. Otherwise you can still expect most everyone to return except maybe some semi-clones, third party characters, and characters at the bottom of a totem pole we can only guess at the logic used to organize.

There's also no real reason to cut echoes. At the very least, Daisy, Dark Samus, and Richter have absolute no work put into gameplay differences. So if their counterparts returned, they would as well.

Smash is the only fanbase that gets hyped up over having content REMOVED.

Long time picks that didn't get in until Ult, like Ridley and K rool, are safe for life.

Gimmick/joke characters like Wii Fit and Plant are sort of one way or the other, who knows.

Classic (retro, e.g. G&W) characters are probably all safe.

First party characters that were cut from Brawl to Smash 4, and several from Melee like Roy and Mewtwo, are probably safe for life.

3rd parties are all inherently fairly unsafe, some moreso than others. Bayo and Sonic are probably safest.

Outlandish characters like Corrin who aren't very iconic are the truly unsafe ones.

The beating heart of value in this series is its large roster. There's a handful of antiquated protragonists and side-characters that I think can be rotated out (along with pruning some clones, so considering both, like Dr Mario, Dark Pit, Dark Samus, Chrom, Roy, Corrin, Sheik, Jiggs, etc.) but otherwise scorch-earthing 2/3rds the roster would be a disaster

I don't get this complaint. Nobody else is significant enough to add. I think some of the wackier characters like Skullkid or even Kass for a music moveset would be fun but pretty much everyone who ISN'T a triforce holder in Zelda is fluff.

He's a vidya protag that's a complete softie that doesn't actually want to hurt anyone and is super sheltered and naive. I really like that sort of character especially with the tragic vibes and theme of having to make massive decisions in really tough and unclear circumstances. Design wise I find the sort of awkward autistic look extremely relatable. Kirin are my favorite mythical creatures and conceptually dragon princess jesus with a chainsword is just based dumb fun. The partial transformations and helmet look sick and I hate wearing shoes IRL.

Rool was originally designed as a heavy that did things heavies weren't supposed to be able to do, then the armor was added later to make him more unique. Or maybe I'm getting them mixed up. The interview's out there somewhere, but it's ultimately irrelevant to the point I was making.
They're not removing Shiek for Impa for the same reason they're not cutting Falco and the same reason that Roy is likely to stay. Your best bet is a Sheik echo, but there's no point.

Problem, is, Sakurai is no stranger to cutting fan-favorite. That's exactly what I'm saying. Jiggs is a lock for smash because jigglypuff has avoided the cutting block for 5 games. If they were going to cut one of the original 12 they would have by now. Jiggs is the most likely of the 64 roster to get cut but it isn't likely to be cut in the grand scheme.
Also you can't be serious if you think incineroar has more starpower than jigglypuff. Again, a lot of it is simple virtue of being in smash for so long. Being from the most well known gen and prominent in the most well known season of the anime adds to that. Jiggs is staying. Incineroar is probably staying, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it go.
Think what you want, Ridley is one of the safest bets out of all the Ultimate newcomers. Feel free to screencap.

Square is run by retards, don't act like you'd be surprised. Cloud is the one guaranteed cut on the whole roster. But I think SE is going to have him return as DLC to suck all the money they can out of it/

The ONLY way you could sign me up for cutting characters now is if they start from scratch, cut EVERYONE and then re-add characters rethinking their movesets from the ground up. Either reboot the series so there's a reason to play it over Ultimate, or it'll just be a worse Ultimate, and why play that?

Even if they rework everyone I don't think they can do it good enough to warrant it in the first place. It would easily be outdone by a fan mod for ultimate that has the whole roster and PM-level improvements. The ideal way to go is just forwards.

Also, change Tom into Tom & Jerry. Jerry should be part of his moveset. They don't have to be friends. You can make it so Jerry shows up and Tom tries to hit him with a broom and that creates a hurt box in front of him.

Fairly safe to say that all of the third-party characters from companies that Nintendo doesn't have strong business ties with (aka everyone but Sega) are going to get cut.

Sega, Namco, and Capcom seem like they'd be willing to continue playing ball. Konami's a little more up in the air. Square Enix can fuck off without much lost though.
