Horror is ruined when you can simply kill or erase whatever it is thats supposed to be scaring you. Even revealing the identity of something can ruin the experience. When most people first played Amnesia for example, you get terrified by the atmosphere and the mystery of what is going on, but when you finally run into the monster, if you just kind of find a position to just watch it for a while or just see it enough times it eventually loses all of its actual horror. The answer to good horror, and the reason games might not ever be the best genre for it, is that the less you know the better.

The genre as a whole needs to stop trying to be other games in the genre. Horror is a theme not a gameplay style and so many games seem to not understand this enough since they almost all platy the same. you dont need to reinvent the genre to fix it. Devs just need to get off their ass and stop all making the same game
