how easy do you think it is to just make up a culture?
I hope you realize that it's impossible to ever create something entirely original, everything you can think of is just the connection between two already existing ideas, so creating something non-derivative is impossible

yo momma

You'd prefer to have to learn a whole new vocabulary for every single game you play that doesn't take place in the real world?

Yes, more lore is always welcome

So what is the alternative? Make up some bullshit units of measurements that give no reference to the players?

Why not use non-decimal number base while you're at it?

see

Not him, but I care more about story than lore.

I care about Story+Lore

Wrong.

If lore element doesn't add anything of value to the world building or story, then it's redundant. Original measure units are only not redundant if they describe something not presented in our world, say mana. If original measure units describe some value which can be easily described in units we already know, then it's pointless. One thing is creating new fantasy animals and calling them original names, the other is having cats and calling them eyjafjallajökulls despite them clearly being just regular cats.

This just makes me sad

FFXIV does this and it's stupid

Well yes, the first cutscene sort of spells that out

>Sci-fi/Fantasy world
>Three of the main party members and the antagonist are all magically 5000-10000 years old little girls

That's idiotic.
One will be more immersed if they have an idea of the scale when using familiar units rather than something made up.

You can easily guess how long 50 meters is, but you can't at all know how long 20 troms is.

this
we're all just playing one huge game of doodle god

doesn't give shit like "native americans, but they're minotaurs" a pass

>Game set on a distant planet
>"Urth? Never heard of it!"
>Five minutes later
>Woah, did you feel that earthquake!?

Attached: 1542578434893.jpg (436x536, 51K)

earth means dirt you absolute pedant

the americans only have bullshit measurements that aren't even decimal and they seem to do fine

Why the fuck would distant aliens, who have obviously never even heard the word "earth" before (Hence the Urth spelling) call their soil earth and seismic activity earthquakes?

why would they call it an earthquale if they weren't speaking english? and if they're speaking english they're calling it an earthquale because the ground is shaking.

>man and woman are male and female HUMANS respectively
>aliens use the same words on their own species genders

user, if you lived on Mars, and have never heard or said the word earth before, you would not call a quake an earthquake. Please see a doctor.

>Hello traveler, I need you to get 1290317241290471274oumy from the basement down at the local pub, its just 12031247,293474.2mmuery to the sasodh of here.
Fuck your faggy autism.

>game set on fantasy world
>game doesn't make up an entire language
>tutorial isn't just learning the entire made up language

Imagine the pace of a Star Trek episode if every conversation with an alien went like

>Human says something
>Device spits out alien translation
>Alien says something
>Their device spits out human translation.

It'd kill the pace and take you out of the moment.

>Game set in ancient ruins
>Cultures that lived here had their own languages
>Puzzles require you to understand some of the basics of the language
Based La-Mulana

funny, considering that the martian surface is nearly 100 percent dirt

What if the game's original language isn't english? The word earthquake doesn't have a root in "earth" as much as it does in "ground" or "floor" in languages that aren't english
Even just words with roots in greek already serve as good enough of an example, don't be retarded

>Game set into the future
>Theres still whites.

See the question is did we start calling earth the planet first or the material on the surface of the planet
That would tell us if the term for dirt is "earth" actually or if it would have a different name on another planet

>alien speaks in a humanly way that words and concepts are the same, basically being just another foreign language

Do you really want to have to traipse around a fantasy world that keeps on blathering about how many quomblaps or durgles or snakelongs it is to the next village?

The entire appeal behind fantasy is its use of the metaphysical to put humanity in experimental situations unique, improbable, or unexpected, in order to gauge human reaction and consequences to extraordinary situations. Everything else is window dressing. If the unit measurements are what ruin it for you, chances are you really are an actual autist.

people didn't even know earth was a planet they just said that the shit they keep stepping on every day was called earth and the term got granfathered in when earth was found to be a planet
