They do, when a new game releases it has to compete with all other similar games to it, even the ones from the same franchise. For example, if a new game from an already established franchised released, why would you as a costumer buy the new instalment when you could just buy the previous game for cheaper with probably even more content (since it has had support from the developers for some time) than the new one? Of course this probably won't take away many sales but they're still potential ones that developers have to take into consideration.
