If I remember right, didn't EA start hiring more people to work on it after the reveal and demo's were so well received. The result was people shoehorning new ideas on and changing the artstyle to that googly cute thing we ended up with.
One of the new hires complained that this game went against her christian upbringing and generally kicked up a fuss to the point where you'd wonder why she was even working on it instead of going to another project.

How come no one ever tried to make a game like this again? Creating your own creature and populating Earth, meeting other people's creatures, doing war or allying up. Really fun stuff. They just need to cut the space bullshit which completely trivializes the creature building aspect and focus on Earth and tribalistic relations.

The closest to that would be Stellaris I think. Too bad how Paradox themselves don't really know which direction the game should be heading, so they rework the base game every patch or so.
