Which Dead Rising is the best?

Played a bit of 1 and 2, never played 3 or 4, but haven't finished any of them. Which should I get to have the best dead rising experience? I only want to buy one

1 is the best.
2 is a lot of fun.
stop there.

As an overall coherent "package", the best game to experience for the first time, simply DR1.

But for quantity of content, replay value, and my overall personal favorite to go back to and fuck around in, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.
Get it on either PC, or the HD version on PS4.

I only played 2, what makes OTR your favourite?

1 had SOUL because of Frank, the bizarre Japanese development touches and the "smooth" feel of the MT Framework Engine. DR1 was the first game I played on the 360 back in 2006, and it's still one of my top 5 games of all time, but I was always dissapointed with every single entry after.

how long is the story of off the record? is it a full games worth?

DR 2/OTR and DR3 are my favourites, especially in coop.
DR4 is a fucking joke, just ignore it.

If you only wanna buy one, I recommend Off The Record (same map as DR2, with an additional theme park).

OTR is 2 without the bullshit.
No tryhard story, Frank is back kicking ass, and the mall is your playground, nice and simple.
OTR is "ok we fucked up, let's remake 2 but it's just 1 again with the added crafting system".
More or less as long as DR1.
Maybe slightly shorter, i think.

Not that user, but from what I remember it is almost same game the original DR2, except it's Frank instead of Chuck. There's also the number of other things that are new and different, including story-wise. One of the greatest things about this game is not only is does it have Frank, but it also has Terence J. Rotolo; the same VA from DR1. IIRC, he really kept in line with Frank's character from the first game, unlike the guy who did a terrible performance in DR4.

Chuck actually IS still present in OTR.
But it's an alternate timeline where things...didn't exactly go well for him.

DR1 and DR2 are great games
DR3 is okay
DR4 is fucking abysmal, fuck it to hell and back

fpbp

OTR is absolutely retarded thematically, it makes no sense for Frank's character to become a socialite talk show host and then a washed up alcoholic; he'd have immediately gone investigating the orphans you find out about during the true ending to #1

How good is the PS4 version of DR1?

play 1 and OTR, forget the rest exists

1 is the all time champ. 2/OTR are pretty good, decent follow ups.
3 is fun, but a totally different ball game.
4 is a god awful piece of shit that I wish I could erase from history.

1 is incredible, 2 fucked it up by making the map too open and adding overpowered items through crafting. You could get guns easily in 1 but they still weren't that great and you had to make a special trip usually, and there were plenty of points where you had to balance avoiding psychopaths and dangerous areas and rescuing survivors. In 2 it's super easy to avoid events when you're escorting survivors, in 1 it could cost too much time.

I think the intro to OTR mentions that he did that. Besides that, Frank is a bumbling retard so none of the other stuff is really out of character for him.

>Frank is a bumbling retard
Hey.
He's covered wars you know.

Dead Rising reboot on RE engine from Jap devs when?

1, easily.

2 has fun co-op and is kinda fun but you can already see the dip in quality due to being made by canucks rather than based nips

>I don't know, I hope they got away!
how was 1 so perfect

thanks everyone, went with OTR because it seems to be the most agreed on answer. those that are saying 1 don't mention OTR which I assume means they missed playing it.

now how do I play dead rising? the first time through i should just fuck up zombies and level up as much as possible right?

1 is the only release I'd recommend. Go from there if you really enjoy it and check out 2/OTR/3, but 1 is the only one really worth playing

You can definitely beat the game on your first playthrough but to rescue everyone and beat every boss you need to have a timetable pretty much.

You should honestly get 1 AND OTR.
Straight up missing on 1 and jumping into OTR isn't a good idea.
Those of us that are recommending you OTR played DR1 first.

1 is the best
2(+OTR) has some mechanical improvements, but the devs were aping DR1 without understanding why some of the things the way they were

this resutls in all the basic weapons and items being mostly garbo, in DR1 items, outside of comedic ones(that still served a purpose as PP boosters), had a function, to traverse faster, clear pathways between zombies etc., they all had to be functional and useful, and this mentality trickled down into how i-frames worked on the jumpkick, the speed of bladed weapons etc

DR2 only superficially mimics this, the devs 'functional' goal was absent for everything that wasn't combo weapon, so the basic items and weapons basically exist for hyuks and are token

this is just one way DR2 missed the forest for the trees when it aped DR1, but still, the foundation was good enough that 2 is second best in the series

3 is a piece of shit open world collectathon musou tier shitfest, the only difference between this and 4, is that 4 is a lot smaller and cheaper, but only slightly shittier and both have the same mentality, wacky zombo bashaton which is obnoxious as fuck

i haven't pressed buy yet and there is this 3-pack on steam which is 1, 2, and OTR which is tempting.

is timetabling fun or does it ruin the experience?

I've never bothered with it, but if you're going to you should at least do your first run blind. Much more fun that way.

>there is this 3-pack on steam which is 1, 2, and OTR which is tempting.
Yep, just go for that and play 1 first, then OTR.
And that's about it.

>is creating an excel sheet fun
fuck do you think?

anyways, just stick to playing the game for the first couple of playthroughs, do main cases, try saving people if can, don't bother with doing everything in a single run until you've atleast beaten the game once

timer only hurts you if you want to do 'missions' as it were, you can fail the main mission and keep playing until your 3 days are up and you can start over

3 establishes that the list was a fake to make Carlito's plans clear without giving it away, Frank and Isabella got captured by the military after the ending of 1 (tie in book) and so had to give shit to them. Otherwise the government would just kidnap all the orphans and shoot them in the face.

>buying games directly from steam
you could buy all five releases for a fraction of the price

non-nip DRs aren't canon, sorry

Flawless, runs at 60fps

Can we just get a Dead Rising 2 made in-house by Capcom on the RE Engine that completely disregards the middling - shit entries put out by Blue Castle Games. That would be nice.

By the way, if anyone is interested in expanding their understanding of the series:

This channel is probably the main and most comprehensive channel for everything DR releated on YT.
Anything from cut concent, interviews, history of the project, mechanical minutiae, this guy has been a DR autistic savant for years at this point.
It helped me fill in the gaps on a bunch of things i wasn't aware of when it comes to DR as a whole.

>is timetabling fun or does it ruin the experience?

Actually following a guide for 100% is boring, learning it yourself from memory so you can make the most of level 1 runs is the fun in replays, that and making due with whatever level up you get, one of the things I hated about 3 that no one ever mentions is how it lets you choose a level up power which kills replays because of course I'll go for what's useful.
