X5 and X6 are great games but they both have fatal flaws which unfortunately just kind of shit on whatever you'd find good. X7 is so fucking bad it actually kinda becomes fun, though it does have a very cute artstyle. X8 is a good game.

I really like X8 as a game but it's main problem is that almost all its stages have fucking gimmicks. But it's still really fun in the end.
X6 is very debatable. You either like the level of challenge it has, or you hate it for that very reason.
X5 is well kinda you have to play it for yourself. I like it. But less so over the years

The Nightmare system isn't a bad idea, it could've been an elaboration on X1's stage changes if handled properly. They just happened to implement it very lazily, more time and playtesting could've easily hashed that mechanic out into something more bearable.

It's hard to tell because of an over reliance on gimmicky shit like Ride Bikes (?) and the pre-rendered effects that probably looked cool in the 90's have not shown their age at all and lead to kind of flat ugly levels.
It's a general consensus thought that X7 really really sucks.

i unironically like x7 more then the rest
sure the VA is bad but the gameplay is fun as fuck once you get X. completely replaces axl but by then your probably only playing Zero and his shit is fun to do in a 3D enviroment so it pays off.

each stage is enjoyable and offered different and the artstyle all around is probably top notch

It's really not. The stage design NEVER uses 3D space to its benefit, instead offering up the most banal and lifeless stage designs in an X game...if you're lucky. If you're not, you're wrestling with the godawful camera angles or haven't unlocked X yet since he's the only remotely playable character. Yeah, let's not overlook how Axl is chip damage the character while Zero's close range combat couldn't have been translated into 3D more incompetently if they tried. Now, X7 does have some okay moments, some bosses like Splash Warfly and Snipe Anteator do put forth patterns that evoke the sort of rhythm a good X boss evokes, but like 95% of this game was just a mistake. Even its menus are as painful to navigate as menus can be, it's like the developers actually hated their audience and wanted everyone who played this to suffer because fuck them and the horse they rode in on.

Booster Forest alone is worth more than the whole of X7, and that isn't even the best one. There are some stinkers for sure like Troia Base, Inferno and of course Dynasty, but on the flipside you've got stages like Pitch Black, Primrose and Sigma Palace that are actually pretty solid. X8 also had the sense to FINALLY drop rescuable reploids and just made a shop for upgrades instead and gave X a mix and match dual armor set, all while taking the core gameplay back to probably the most fundamental it's been since X5 and for the better. X8 isn't quite a great game but it's absolutely superior to X7. Hell, X7 wasn't even a good game by the standards of its release year.
