I'm a big fan of Doom but I can't seem to get into Build engine games. I didn't really like Blood, I found Shadow Warrior to be pretty uninteresting (although I'll give it another shot sometime), and I beat Duke but didn't find it that incredible. I think more recent Doom wads may have spoiled me.

One of the most disappointing moments in gaming ever for me was realizing how unbalanced Blood is. The normal enemies are super easy to kill and the cultists are super overpowered. The level design really carries the game a whole lot.

It's not a fair comparison because of technology advancement but Doom's levels are honestly way more forgettable than Duke's most of the time. I still remember levels like all of ep1, that big vertical fusion tower, the moonbase with trams, it just goes on. Doom levels play well but are pretty mazey and often indistinct

I highly doubt someone like EA would buy Duke, because it would require more than the bare minimum cash grab tactics to make money off it. You know, what Gearbox are doing right now. The only people who would be willing to buy Duke are groups like Devolver and 3D Realms, who won't have a lot of money to throw at it but will have genuine plans to do something worthwhile with the franchise.

If I had fuck you money, I'd probably buy Blood off Warner Brothers (or Atari, which one owns the actual IP again?) before I bought Duke though.

Humans in Doom are super slow and die easily. Chaingunners just shoot non-stop and take 2 or 3 hits.

The shotgun's dps and range isn't that good, it's just a good default choice.

Shotgun is good but it's not the best at anything as far as I recall. Except maybe for oneshotting the laser scouts

Duke's shotgun isn't overly strong at all, it's right in the middle as a workhorse sort of weapon. The Riot Gun in shadow warrior is a better example of a shotgun that is so damn good you don't want to switch off it.

The way he reacts to certain things in certain older games are red flags. You have to know what to look for though. I've suspected it since the first video ive seen.

You couldn't "fap" like we're used today (in all fairness it would've sucked anyway even if I did have it, for plenty of different, mundane reasons that I won't discuss for practicality); it was all fine and dandy but whenever you had the itch to unload the leathered rod's cargo, you knew shit would irremediably go south... You had to do it with whatever you had lying around, such as two clothed literal watermelons (or other spherical fruits) that after being positioned in a certain way and watched in a certain perspective, they might appear as a nice rack... But often it wasn't anything that drastic, simple imagination would do on times of famine; better else, sometimes you were so lucky you could find a porn magazine laying around the streets (those were most likely simple lingerie ads though, at least I never had such miracles)... Then you know, videogames came along being confidently more and more realistic (at least for the standards back in the day), and sometimes you got lots of legit possibilities regarding this serious matter. You start by being hesitant and by being embarassed in yourself for even thinking about it, but it was such a novelty that you had to try it at least once. So yeah, I said why not... I mean, it's not like clothed watermelons are better anyway; and so, at least in my case, it was Duke 3D's babes: that's when it all began. After the first time, everything changed. I have such nostalgia for this game and this thing I've just mentioned is probably the top reason for it; I mean.. Whenever I used to find one of those trapped sluts devoid of destiny I would quickly unzip my pants and rub it like a motherfucking German shepherd, then when I was near the climax I would press the use button and let them say "kill meee" so my imploding tree of life would finally scatter its seeds everywhere like if it was a festival of semen or something; finally, I would kill them for reasons

Half Life itself wasn't a bad game, the problem is that it showed every company out there that they could cut down on FPS production by putting all the effort into pretty graphics and none of the effort into levels that aren't corridors.

Half life by itself isn't the problem.

The problem is that Half Life existed in an industry where everyone tries to emulate the newest and greatest thing. Which basically took a rather nuanced genre and made it go full-bore into a single type of game which was ultimately worse for the genre. Every mediocre 00's era shooter? You have HL to thank, even if the game itself is pretty good.
But that said, HL1's contribution to the industry was still not as catastrophic as HL2s.

Excellent RPG-driven games that were also stuck in development hell for a very, very long time. Which, while successful, resulted in them succumbing to industry madness as they failed to live up to the expectations of other shooters at the time of their release. Thus homogenizing them or outright killing them until something came along and re-imagined how they should play (for better or worse)

SS2 built upon SS1, Deus Ex started development in 1997. The similarities are there, but it's not like they wouldn't have happened without HL.

But like I said, the HL clones existing doesn't mean they're bad. It means HL opened the floodgates to all the mediocrity that overtook the classic shooters.
