I like both, sue me. Rex is tropey but he's still got some pretty unique characteristics that identify him and separate him from other JRPG protags.
Noctis seems like more of a self insert protag since he doesn't talk as much, but he's also a prince with the entire weight of the world on his shoulders and had his waifu stolen/killed so the brooding is understandable.

Sora is great, perfect combination of dumb/happy/go lucky and just the right amount of smug. Plus he has no issue killing people outright. I loved the scene where he Donald and Goofy giggled about having killed Maleficent.

Rex is legitimately a great protagonist, he turns a whole pile of JRPG cliches on their head, his character arc culminating in ch7/8 was great, and the way he loses all discomfort around his love interests from that point on was endearing as hell.

Even if he doesn't talk the "Hero" of Dragon Quest V is a better character.

Nia's character arc revolves around her accepting defeat and moving on as a love interest. She's content just being his blade.

Nah rex isn't that bad, he act like kid because is one and even then he is pretty mature for his age.

I thought his character arc ended right in the last cutscene, when he finally accept that he can't save everyone.

Most of my issues with Rex come from the shit emoting in the high tension scenes
I’d say I like Rex more personally but I can see the value in older protagonists like Noctis

One is from a shitty game aimed at desperate weebs and the other one is Noctis.

Noctis was pretty bad until the ending, when he embraces testosterone and became ready to take responsibility.
