As for "no magical powers", Extra Skills and maybe some regular skills might as well be magic. They bothered explaining that with "Dragon energy" in Seven and then dropped it and said "nah, you learn skills naturally".

It's decent to pretty good, but be careful with NISA's PC port, even with all the patches they've rolled out since then. The PS4 or Switch ports would be ideal.

Resolution fluctuates, so it looks pretty bad in some places, and the fps also drops below 30 in some places. On the other hand, it's the only version with all the costumes if you care about those. The updated translation is there.

I think most of those have been fixed and patched by now, but be a bit wary. Switch port usually has 30 fps max compared to the other ports, so that may be a dealbreaker for you. It's got all the DLC, though.

I often pick this kind of niche jrpgs for Switch because they don't really celebrate with their graphics even on stronger platforms, but this being an action game you might take issue in framerate.

I played it entirely handheld during summer vacation so I can't say how it performs docked, but in portable mode the dynamic resolution can cause the game to look damn terrible in trying to preserve the framerate.
Framerate itself manages to be serviceable, though there was one boss where the game just chokes.

It's a very old franchise, they're cheap to pump out, and they're generally fun to play with some edge cases. You're gonna need a lot of games to go through Adol's journals of adventure, after all.

Ys VIII gets you the most bang for your buck.

I suggest getting it on PC first and refunding if it's not compatible. Make sure you have the most up to date drivers on your computer.

You may as well do all the quests since most of them can be completed as you progress through the story or with a short diversion to kill something. There isn't a lot of time wasting there unless you hate the harder nighttime versions of areas.

I completed every quest in the game without even trying. Most of the fetch quests I already had the items for when I got the quest and if I didn't I got them in the next story area anyway. Finished in just over 50 hours.

For example, it's weird that Ys has everyone you know and love dying off while Cold Steel has friends of yours coming back from the dead, that's all.
