Really, the biggest thing that went right was Microsoft handing them the generation. The Xbox One had a terrible launch. They didn't have a single exclusive in the realm of good. Plus they tried to push a DRM scheme for physical games that pissed gamers off and made them choose Sony out of spite.
The Xbox and Wii U weren't really competition for the PS4. This generation was PS4 vs PC. Nintendo only recently recovered with the Switch.
All Sony had to do was nothing, they did better than nothing and ran away with it.

nintendo, generally remains untouched, they have their own niche. similar to microsoft, they the brand loyalty factor (for decades) and have typecast themselves as the kid friendly console, so parents have a strong incentive to buy a switch for their kid. Kids are still where the money is at with video games. i don't see that changing anytime soon. This is true for games released on all platforms, not just nintendo.
