I played it pretty thoroughly recently and while I appreciate the emphasis on momentum the game (if you can even call it that it's more like a tech demo) definitely needs a lot more work. The handling is very loose and jumping makes platforming pretty difficult. Tighten that up, make your own levels, and then we'll talk.

i suggest you switch to free cam, then you'll quickly realize you can hold forward and control yourself by moving the camera
it's more intuitive to do that in some areas, while in others it's best to keep the camera straight and turn your movement slightly, such as for loops. webm related

What are your preferred Sonic levels?
Because it's hard to say which ones to make when they either are open ended (06), hallways (Heroes/Boost Era) or Mario esque and slow paced (SA1/2, ShTH somwhat and Lost World)

you should check the snowhead level on sonic adventure blast, fren. it's open world fetch quest, u gotta find a kid and then deliver it to the grandpa at the other end of the level. quite unique to do a quest/exploration as sonic desu, it works so well.

It's because the Adventure physics was never accurate to begin with. They simply couldn't do that on that outdated hardware, hence why the more actuate Beta Windy Hill zone was scraped.

the beta windy hill remake looks like it would have worked fine with the final physics. I guess I just don't like how far you get flung off ramps and can just skip massive chunks of speed highway off of one ramp.

That's because the levels are scale too small. The speed of those webms mirror the classic/advance gameplay more closely because it was easier to keep the physics' high speed in check, whereas the Dreamcast games couldn't thanks to the hardware.

That's the biggest flaw with this engine. Sonic's default running speed is too slow and doesn't retain built up momentum like he should.

you can clearly see I charged spindash before doing the u-turn and released it after the u turn, so it gave me the boost. if you do this without spindashing you will lose signifficant speed, enough to make your speed go to 0 and make you fall off.

Not him but no, running was not the fastest speed in the 90s, and not even in the Adventure games. Only Advance 2/Heroes forward did they turn Sonic into Naruto and made him run = fastest like he's Flash or something.

with how this looks to control i dont even think you'd need a homing dash. I dont know why they insist on putting it in. I guess to be in line with adventure.

It really should just be replaced with the dropdash, it's basically the same with better control to gain speed from. Also as is it cripples the chance to bring back shit like the fire shield and other elemental barriers that was better than the damned Wisps.

Because the homing attack is legit a good mechanic if used correctly i.e. not using it as a way to make a bridge over a bottomless pit

i always felt like it slowed down the pace of the game. If you could just jump at an enemy and bounce off them and maintain or even increase your speed like the old games it'd feel great. Just make sonics attack hitbox large and the enemies hurtbox generous

This reminds me, you guys should load up Weapons Bed as Sonic or Shadow in SA2 proper. The level works surprisingly well for them, since you have to navigate it by spindash jumping.

Would never work as an official game, despite what some fans say, momentum physics doesn't work all too well with 3D Sonic level design.
But it's certainly something i'd like to mess around with.
