Banjo Kazooie came out 21 years ago. Assuming everyone who played it was AT LEAST 6 years old at the time it came out, that would mean about a 3rd of Switch buyers have a good chance of knowing who he is. persona 5 is relevant in 2019. banjo-fursuitie has been a dead franchise for over a decade now.
persona 5 is on a platform with actual competition. banjo was on a flop console with hardly any other games.

In a word, gregarious. She's a person that goes out of her way to explore new places and make friends, both to expand her horizons and just for the fun of it. She's one of the few people that is both Kirby and Dedede's friend, she was even able to make friends with Dark Meta Knight. In her boss fights she draws minions that come to life and fight for her. Although she herself is fragile and unremarkable, her painted friends are powerful. Between her gentle personality, painting/drawing abilities, friendliness, and unwavering enthusiasm for life, she makes a perfect support character for Kirby. She's a very brains over brawn character, so in Smash Bros, I imagine she would be a summoner that requires good strategy and planning to use effectively. She should be able to paint all sorts of different characters that behave differently in the stage, creating a large variety of setups and strategies the player could use, while she herself doesn't have the best physical strength or durability to compensate for the usefulness of her paintings.

The main deal with how relevancy works is about how it's "relevant for gaming/fans" vs "relevant by the company itself".
For example, Joker right now is in the perfect spot to be in both, he has his plethora of fans, and Sega/Atlus promotes his series and spinoffs.
