If there's a more despicable human being alive than Randy Pitchford, I've yet to see evidence as such.

8 years out from the release of Duke Nukem Forever and all we have to show for it is a re-release of Duke 3D with an admittedly pretty good new expansion (disregarding the absolutely abysmal final boss and practically useless new flamethrower weapon), and a $5 DLC for a $40 release of a game from the same year DNF dropped.

Say what you will about Nu3DR, Bombshell was a dud, and Fred was retarded for thinking they could release a new game under the guise of a cancelled title they still retained the rights for, but the Interceptor/Slipgate boys clearly have a deep rooted love of the franchise and producing both Ion Maiden and Wrath shows they're on the correct path insofar as catering to the 90s FPS fanboy market is concerned.

Two years since the Duke4 community conference call with Randy wherein he claimed to be working on a Duke retail compilation that would contain the previous builds of Duke Nukem Forever which has been confirmed to be in a working state and within the hands of at the very least the eDuke32 team, 3D Realms, and presumably Gearbox. is there any hope left for duke?
any game or maybe a massive overhaul like that DOOM game we got fairly recently?

I would totally play as a granny Duke
>kids in my day (insert jab to actual video game culture)

I believe now as I always have that a new Duke Nukem game is entirely possible and could be great, as long as it's handled by a studio that understands what made Duke 3D great insofar as level design and gunplay is concerned, as well as understanding the appeal of the franchise and character as a love letter to the Schwarzenegger/Stallone era action movies. I have a hard time thinking that Gearbox Shovelware is that studio.

If Wolfenstein can come back and succeed as a triple A franchise, if Shadow Warrior can come back and succeed as a triple A franchise- why NOT Duke?

It still hurts to think that TX's Duke 3D: Hail to the King Collection will never see the light of day. I don't give a shit about seeing Duke on android platforms, but the fact alone that he was supposedly working on porting Zero Hour, and that work will never be complete, kills me. The console spin-offs are massively under-rated to my mind, and having them playable at high-resolution on PC without the limits of the N64 and PS1 to gimp framerates and make controls awkward is something I've dreamed of for years. Sure, one can always emulate, but packing them up with Duke 3D and getting them out there in an official capacity would give them a chance to stand on their feet alongside the main entries in the series and show that the franchise is not a one-hit-wonder from 1996.

Time to Kill was pure kino. Shame about Forever though.

I wish George Broussard would speak publicly about Duke Forever. He's made one or two tweets pertaining to the game in the years since it's launch but nothing substantial. I'm sure he's still humbled about the entire ordeal, and probably under some kind of NDA, but one can't help but wish for insight from the man who helmed the ship of a 14 year development cycle.

Funny thing about Forever is that we're as far away from the release of HL2:E2 as we were from DNF's announcement when 3D Realms went under. If Gearbox had taken another year or two to polish up the game, rather than shoving it out the door half baked, maybe we'd have a Duke 5 by now. The problem there is that the further away from their acquisition of the game, the less people were likely to think of it as THE Duke Nukem Forever that 3D Realms had been working on.

I actually bought a PSP for the Duke Nukem Trilogy when they showed off screen shots and gameplay footage for it. Supposedly, the unfinished Critical Mass was discovered in an archive at some museum. A damn shame that the DS version was the one to see the light of day.

>as long as it's handled by a studio that understands what made Duke 3D great
Interceptor has been begging to do a Duke game, and the one time it almost happened, they were cockblocked entirely. It feels like a pride thing at this point: ONLY Gearbox knows what's best for Duke, and any NEW Duke game that comes from them will more than likely be a "deconstruction" instead of anything that revels in the fact it's a Duke Nukem game. DNF was about as professional as a Tamsoft game, but there was still enough 3DR DNA in it that made it a nice breath of fresh air in 2011, where your favorite FPS's went to die in retooling hell

>If Wolfenstein can come back and succeed as a triple A franchise
While they still had Riddick/Darkness guys working at MG, you could probably state this, but not currently, nobody gives a shit about Stranger Things anymore, and nobody wants Youngblood as an appetizer to Wolf 3, I don't know how Magnus lost the entirety of the Starbreeze crew (some to fucking OVERKILL of all devs), but the future of Wolfenstein is anything but "AAA tentpole" now beyond financing and marketing

>if Shadow Warrior can come back and succeed as a triple A franchise
SW2 killed the series, both for people who like good games, and for anyone that liked the first game. Since FWH has said absolutely nothing about SW3 beyond "oh maybe I dunno", we have no idea if they've learned their lesson about turning a Shadow Warrior game into an MP-centric loot shooter, or if it's still an IP that exists

People Can Fly could probably do a good Duke game, but I'd rather they warm-up with a Bulletstorm sequel first

>is there any hope left for duke?

Randy "The Magician" Pitchford , I'd say there is no hope, it's worse than death.

I alluded to 'Mass Destruction' earlier, and honestly it's probably a blessing that Bombshell wasn't released as a Duke game. I kind of wish Ion Maiden was a Duke game but it's shaping up to be a damn fine addition to the Build Engine family regardless.

I haven't played New Colossus, although I'm aware the reception is that it was a let down, I still hold hope that the next installment can get things back on track. New Order and Old Blood were damn fine games. Same goes for Shadow Warrior- I'm against condemning a series for one bad installment.

Bulletstorm did not do it for me, but it does seem likely that Gearbox will have People Can Fly working on the next Duke title if there is a Duke title in production. Pray that it isn't some kind of fucking gritty reboot like 'Duke Begins' was supposed to be.

All these pics take me back.
Shame what happened to the industry, I honestly rather not have more Duke games for them to ruin.

I'm glad, user. I'm a fanboy and just wanted to share in my nostalgia this morning. Of course, I'm still holding out hope.

Too bad Duke is not just dead, but held as hostage in Randy Bobandy's hands.
I'd rather see Duke completely forgotten and buried among most of the good forgotten vidya of that era. Because if anything comes out in the future it will have dusgisting Randy magic stinch to it no matter what company will develop it. Because as A:CM development story shows Randy WILL have an influence on development one way or another.
Jesus fucking Christ I have never seen this bullshit and yet I feel like I was molested by Randy's magic tricks for years.

I remember waiting a day to download this teaser from Antagonist, I had to keep telling my mom to stop trying to have her friends call her, because that Callwave bullshit ALWAYS interrupted AOL downloads, despite ads saying it wouldn't. My dad kicked me off the internet for a week because I was "being disrespectful", but it was worth it

People sure are "finding" a lot of OG DNF shit lately, I wish they'd leak it beyond a trickle once every year or so, does Gearbox really give that much of a shit?

There weren't a whole lot of in game screenshots at that time, or really at any point during the development of DNF. Check em at duke4ever DOT altervista DOT org SLASH screenshots1998 DOT html

Ion Maiden is still set for a Q2 2019 release. If i had to wager a guess, I'd say that Voidpoint is still trying to get multiplayer working.

I'd be more interested in what Ken Silverman has to say about it, to be frank.

2K still holds the rights to DNF's distribution although recently Gearbox supposedly acquired a license for the aforementioned retail compilation they're working on. Nu3DR would have to be absolutely suicidal to attempt releasing any of the stuff they have in any major capacity after the legal hell they already went through with Gearbox in 2016.

The E3 2001 trailer is probably the most famous, but I'll never be able to properly articulate how excited the 2007 teaser made me, and all those Jace Hall previews. It felt REAL, like it was actually coming, and coming soon. The leaked design documents from 2009 still leave me to believe there was a good game in there before 'Cutting is shipping and we start this year with a vengeance and a chainsaw'.

Do you ever find the SJWs you're so desperately looking for? You're a waste, kid.

Man I remember seeing gameplay stills from DNF just a few years after D3D came out.

I remember stills of landscape, of Duke driving some kind of dune truck thing, various characters, etc.

Everyone thought "It's coming out any time now!!!"

But then it never did.

Was D3D really known for groundbreaking graphics or something? What made the dev team think they HAD to keep shitcanning their game and adapting it to the newest greatest engine and technology?

With how popular Duke was they could have released a game that was only 50% better looking than D3D and it would have sold super well. I really don't think the graphics is what made the game sell.

I'll never understand why NO ONE put their foot down and just said "Stick with this engine, and release the fucking game, you retard."

blow it out your ass

Attached: 1556288043038.jpg (505x604, 115K)

They got caught up in Duke's rivalry and comparisons with Doom. Then id made Quake 1-3 all graphical powerhouses of their respective years etc

post those douks

Attached: 1481653640118.png (560x560, 214K)

I remember browsing the 3D realms forums every few months to see if there were any news, knowing well enough that there wouldn't be any. They really were assholes about it, too, banning anyone who dared complain about the lack of progress.

really enjoyed time to kill, the splitscreen deathmatch was fun as well

To be fair, Quake looked terrible when it came out, at least on average hardware. Even Duke 3D looked better at those resolutions.

You can always say "Thank You" to George Broussard on twitter.
He was the problem of the DNF development cycle.
Every time something new and innovative came out and George played it he felt the urge to stuck some of those element in the game even if it meant to completely fuck up the just established process of development.
Some of ex-3DR employees were even joking about not letting Broussard play new games.

I don't think it was about being graphically on the cutting edge so much as it was being the best shooter possible insofar as having every possible feature. Duke 3D was astonishing when it came out for its unprecedented levels of interactivity with the world, destructible environments, huge setpieces etc, clearly setting it on a tier above Doom. The thing to understand about 3D Realms at the turn of the century is that they were fucking LOADED, and beholden to no-one. George Broussard was co-founder of the studio with Scott Miller, they had accepted no money from publishers to be held accountable for, and so they were perfectly free to iterate endlessly as long as the money kept flowing. Of course, once you get to about 2006 and you're years removed from any major release and the royalties from selling your stakes in things like Max Payne and Prey have dried up.. that's when someone stepped in and grabbed the reigns from George. It was just too late by then.

It was a terrible idea for Nu3DR to relegate those boards to archival, their new forum software is horrible and never took off as a community, everyone just went over to Duke4.

HEHEHEH WHAT A MESS

Megaton Edition always had a weird mouse acceleration problem that made me dislike it. That said, World Tour is incompatible with eDuke32, includes the XBLA version's rewind from death feature, and implemented the worlds worst weapon wheel that slows the flow of combat unnecessarily because its a fucking console port

World Tour was also missing some content from Megaton Edition because "they weren't in the original Duke 3D hur hur hur"

was duke 3d really that much of a hit that 3dr managed to produce prey and max payne? what happened to the og version of prey anyways?

Attached: duke.png (599x526, 39K)

Attached: 1546914354169.jpg (843x460, 87K)

I mentioned the x-pacs here supposedly they're in a grey legal area and Randy alleges that Devolver didn't really have the rights to include them in Megaton to begin with but it doesn't change the fact that it was the first time they were commercially available in 15 years and now they aren't again.

Duke 3D was kind of a huge deal. Prey went into the same kind of development hell DNF went into, though mostly based on tech limitations of the portal gimmick they had for it. The same people who claim to have the archives of DNF's old builds have said to hold builds of Prey from that era.
