The thing os that Itagaki is legit the only one who can properly direct NG, anyone else at Team Ninja just fucking sucks. Just look at NG3, that's such a fundamentally flawed game that even after the massive improvements it received in Razors Edge, it's still far from quality set by the previous games.

DW9 was ambitious in scope but the framerate was kind of fucked, even on consoles, and they usually never skip on that shit. Must've started rushing development at the end or something. But now they're trying to salvage it with DLC. I don't think they'll make the same mistake for the tenth game, if they are making one at this point. The series has been a 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' type so making TOO many changes will probably make people look at it weird. Though its understandable when they said 'The difference in 7 and 8 didn't feel like a big change' it was still pretty well received. But at this point they can literally 'afford' to have a game flop every once in a while. Their games usually sell like hotcakes.

tl;dr, they'll be alright. If anything they should try doing a survey to ask what people want for the next game aside from just 'what missing characters you still want' from those popularity contests. I think Chen Gong won the last one.
