No. I was surprised by how easy it was. I spent way too much time preparing. Don't get me wrong you get raided and attacked more than usual but that's really it. If you have good defenses that don't require many colonists to man them nothing really changes.

I think it might depend on the storyteller/how far into the game you are, it was very hard for me and I had a lot of mechanoids
Rimworld is objectively an incomplete game that needs mods. You may not notice in your first playthrough but the game is very-barebones and it's not surprising considering Tynan half-assed the final 6 months. As much as i enjoy my time with it,once you notice the cracks in gameplay it becomes very hard not to exploit it.

Yea but it contributes to the issue I mentioned. Rimworld gets easier as you progress, that's not how a game should work. Adding something that removes the danger posed by random events like eclipses or raids (if you've used vents near the outskirts) just makes that late phase of the game even easier. The fact that it takes resources and research means nothing because at that point it's easy to sit comfortably while that stuff just piles up/gets done.
