What went wrong?
What went wrong?
Sega of America. Every single issue was entirely their fault.
Feel free to put any gameplay issue in this list even if you think they are completely unrelated to SoA, they deserve it and it's probably their fault too anyway.
I never played it. I don't get why the game is so unpopular while Phantasy Star Online is incredible and well liked.
Trust me, it was all because of Sega's incompetence. They fucked up pretty much most of the Phantasy Star releases (except PSPortable 2, dataminers fucked this one on their own and kickstarted a massive drama).
They even gave up on releasing PSO2 on west because they know they can't handle it (even through Sega of Japan had plans for regional events to compensate the lack of animu crossovers).
I actually like PSU/PSP more than PSO.
>except PSPortable 2, dataminers fucked this one on their own and kickstarted a massive drama
I'm a PSPo2baby, can I get some backstory on this?
It just got weird. Kind of like how in PSO2 you end up fighting Train monsters and police cars.
Well, I played 1, PSP (Portable 2) and DS (0) and love them all, but never saw anyone talking about Universe.
What happened was that people duped shit all the times, legit players didn't accept anything of course, then MONTHS later they decided to patch it so everyone who still had meseta would hoard them, as a legit player I couldn't buy anything anymore and just decided to quit that shit altogether, let's not forget about the content locked on the disc that would take MONTHS before being available.
PSPo2 had a "passcode" system that basically unlock fancy items like room decorations if you have the correct codes.
Sega if America wanted to give these codes to specific magazines and vidya-related sites as a basic marketing strategy, but dataminers messed with the game's files and posted the whole list of codes on the "official" (directly monitored by Sega) Phantasy Star community forum. The Sega employee that monitored the forum threw a massive fit twice (on the official forum and on the dataminer forum). I don't remember much about what happened after that (I was just lurking the PS-World forums back then) but PSPo2's only marketing strategy was ruined.
Also, in Japan, said codes unlocked posters of gravure idols. We got one poster of a cool fanart from an official pre-release contest and some other forgettable shit. Japanese copyrights and contracts are a bitch, I guess.
So what's the commotion with the Clementine PSU server lately? Did they rewrite the server code and get through their first character wipe?
1. The game launched with basically 10-20 hours of content and I'm not even exaggerating. People used to spam Plains Overlord back in 2006 because there was so little to do.
2. Hacking/duping was rampant. It completely ruined the item and meseta economy.
3. The game didn't reach a good stage until AOTI came out a year after PSU launch.
4. Sega of America completely and utterly neglected the game. US PSU was massively behind JP PSU in terms of content. By the end of JP PSU's lifetime it had pretty much double the content that US PSU did, and we NEVER got that content.
5. In addition to said neglect, you had to pay a fucking MONTHLY FEE for a game that had 50% of its content never localized and had rampant hackers/dupers.
Despite all this I don't think PSU fucked up more than PSO2. PSO2 was a really good game during episodes 1 and 2 and then it became a mobile tier gacha game with atrocious gameplay and weeb whales who keep that trash game alive.
Pic related was the last good Phantasy Star game, and that's mostly because the gameplay is straight out of PSO2 episodes 1 and 2, when the game was at its peak.
Ah, I see. Do you know what was with the passcode slip that came with the physical game? Because I looked at my copy recently and it said it was required to play online, but I never entered that code.
PSP and PSP2 are pretty comfy games.
Yes, Clementine rewrite servers recently went live and this time you can actually say it's PSU. It is massively better than the old server. PSU is back.
However Clementine will never be as good as the real thing. Clementine was put together by reverse engineering almost everything about the game. This means that lots of items are missing, crucial features are missing (GAS, Crafting/Synthing, etc) and there are lots of things wrong with the drop rates and drop tables, boss AI and overall game values.
No idea. I only played the single player. Didn't even have an internet connection back then I think.
I remember liking it but I don't recall finishing it.
That's good to hear. From my understanding, it's possible that there may be a second wipe in order to iron things down more. And I get that it'll never be the same as Sega's official server due to how backwards the network code was on that game. I think there are some event data as well that are basically lost forever and can't be brought back.
WHO SAID WE ARE LOST AGAIN
I thought it was a pretty good game brought down by some major factors. First off, fuck SEGA. There was so much stuff not brought to the west. WHY DID YOU LOCK MOATOOB FOR THAT FUCKING LONG FOR NO REASON? AAAAAAAAAAAH. Also fuck PA grinding. Were there not enough things to level already? Now I gotta level each move INDIVIDUALLY? I could probably beat several games by the time I max out ONE PA.
The online passcode was used to unlock the online features for physical buyers (online play and a basic e-mail system). It was s unique code for each copy of the game, but if I remember correctly piratefags managed to break it and play online anyway.
The item passcode system used generic codes that are the same for all copies of the game, that is why dataminers managed to post it a few days after the game's release.
Yeah. I mean I'm still going to keep supporting the project and I hope that they are able to get those important features and missing content back in the game.
The game's finale was online-only, offline-only players only got Ethan's dumb military hight school anime story and a cliffhanger ending.
anyone knows if clementine is playable now?
You know you can look at their website, right? Or even read the thread for 5 seconds.
reading is for nerds, give me the answer virgin
But if I told you, you'd have to read it.
