His ideas may sound cultish at first, but he's ultimately right. Digital devices play such a major role in most aspects of our lives that the way they work should by all means be transparent. All software should be open source, but keep in mind, that does not mean you shouldn't be able to earn money via software.
Think about it, the ONLY reason you could disagree with him is because "it's hard" to let go of some closed source stuff you're used to.
