They absolutely are not. Musous achieve the most shallow surface level fun possible, where pushing a button that kills 100 enemies is a spectacle that stimulates you for all of 5 seconds until you realize this is the entire game.

I've seen people defend the genre by saying its more about base control and management, but that is just as shallow and terrible as the combat. It's one of the most stagnant, formulaic style of games to exist. And they are usually fucking grindfests too, I cannot possibly understand how anyone can like a single musou.

I liked the PS2-era DW games a lot for their music, setting, plot, history, and occasional strategy elements, and I think if most people played them they would agree. But it seems that they're an exception to the musou subgenre and almost all the others focus on the core gameplay above all, which is arguably the weakest form of combat in action games and requires some steady flow of upgrades through loot to keep you playing at all. Shame, since I really enjoyed those games.
