Yes, there was an older game called "Megami Tensei", but they're technically legally unrelated, which is why SMT changed all demon designs. MT was a novel adaptation published by Namco, and just developed by Atlus. "SMT" was a fully Atlus owned game that ended up used as basis for many of their future titles.
You do get "Megaten" used as an informal categorization for everything, but it's just informal. Note that when they published the Megami Tensei remakes, they actually had to credit Namco again, but you don't see Namco credited for Shin Megami Tensei IV for example.

Someone explain the appeal of Musou to me. I've played the Berserk one, the first Fate one and the Dynasty Warriors on the Vita and they all feel like ass to play. Once you get over the "wow i'm playing as x character i like" you're just mashing the attack button and watching dudes fly into the air in perfect sync.
