From practical point of view, first 3 of them are useful in honorable duels and hacking unarmored peasants. 1832 as a short side weapon for finishing off armored opponents that have been strucked down. Zweihander for cavalry, I guess.
None of these weapon can effectively dispose of armored enemy though.
Gimme that basic bitch longsword aw yeh
Straight swords are cooler, curved swords are more practical. Swords are only good against unarmored body parts, so you might as well maximize the damage against that. Sure, a heavier straight sword is better than the lighter curved sword against armored opponents, but it's in the same sense that a gun does better against a tank than a rock, they're both useless in that situation. Anyone with any sense uses sabers/scimitars.
Because swords are cumbersome, useless at most times, and when they are useful they compete with a knife and lose out.

Lmfao RIP loser
I pick the Zweihander and kill everyone because i can halfsword with it and effectively use it as a spear
Vast majority of that shit is a meme, like everything else. 90% of wars are fought by Naginatas and bows, just like Europe. Axes, maces, etc... all that shit is a meme. The bow and spear are gods of warfare.

You're both retards, a Halberd is a type of weapon in the class known as polearms which both Halberds and Naginatas are classed in. The nips mostly used either bows or Yari which is a traditional japanese spear. They eventually moved on to using firearms during the sengoku period because guns beat everything.

You're trying too hard, no shit it's a halberd. When I mentioned it by name, I was specically talking about what the Japs use from that picture. "yari" is literally spear, I could have picked any of the other shit literally named spear if I wanted to pick a spear. All polearms are generally good.

Yes. And historically used to successfully kill one of the greatest swordsman in Japan, if you know how to use it in correct timing.

Superior Nippon Steel is useless if you are getting baited and suffer environmental disadvantage, which make not able to swing it accurately

Sabre? You mean sabre turbo from gta vc?
>non-polearm plebians

No, I mean Sabre -the weapon- because I've learned Enlish not "Americaneese"
Katana. Not because it's SUPERIOR MIRRION FORDED NIPPON STEER or whatever, I know that it's not a superior sword in a mechanical sense. I just think that fighting styles for katanas are more interesting, since they're based around slashing strikes and quick draws rather than lots of parries and thrusts.
Second choice would be Rapier, for similar reasons; the fighting styles around it are really unique looking and interesting, clearly developed for that specific weapon. 99% of the other swords on that list are essentially interchangeable from a stance and style perspective (if you break them into one-handed and two-handed categories), it's just little things like reach and cross-section that are different.
A macuahuitl should count as a sword. A really shitty sword.

Obsidian is far sharper then steel, and while it's more brittle and the blades would break after prolonged use, you still have a giant ass club left.
The Conquistadors were scared shittless of the things for a reason: At it's best, it's a sword with way more force behind it and with a way finer edge, and at it's worse, it's still an effective bludgeoning weapon.
Give me a large round shield + gladius and I could beat any sword on there
>No Dacian Falx

In modern combat using guns would be better.
If guns are not allowed then crossbows and normal bows would be better. All you would have to do is sneak up on your enemy and shoot them.
If no ranged weapons are allowed then full plate armor and spears would be the best since you get the range and protection
>Says the internet tough guy

plate armor was made out of sheet metal, aka up to 3mm in thickness You could quite literally pierce though that armor with any modern fireaxe.
>youtube.com
inb4 it's not real, muh medieval uberbows, muh bias
That pic is a falcata faggot
Actually it's the other way around. Most bows used for warfare was made specifically to pierce plate and was super effective at it. English longbows were able to decimate plated troops without any sweat.
i'm a brainlet, please explain:
what's the advantage of upward curved swords like the sabre?
what's the advantage of downward curved swords like the kukri?
why do people say swords are a meme, when they were used all over the world for thousands of years?
Yes, if you are going to aim at the point with most radius you will have harder time to penetrate, if you reduce angle of attack as much as possible it would be easier to penetrate.
This isn't rocket surgery.
bring me a Khopesh, a Kilij, and a Spatha

>what's the advantage of upward curved swords like the sabre?
Literally, non.
>what's the advantage of downward curved swords like the kukri?
When you pull out, sword creates deeper would on exit.
>why do people say swords are a meme, when they were used all over the world for thousands of years?
Because guns exist.
Curved sword are less likely to catch in flesh
Kukris have more force concentrate on less of the blade, allowing a pseudo puncture effect.. i guess
Where does this meme history come from? The rise of plate armour also started a rise of 2 handed weapons because it allowed a knight to no longer wield a shield, because the plate stopped almost any attacks, including bows. Even if it goes through a few cm it won't go through the gambeson underneath.
>You could quite literally pierce though that armor with any modern fireaxe.
The one in this video is a 2-2.5mm steel plate, now even crossbows can pierce it.
>what's the advantage of upward curved swords like the sabre?
Longer blade area and extra mass in the belly of the blade provide more slicing power. Extreme curves, like in Polish sabres, can be used for tricky angles with training.
>what's the advantage of downward curved swords like the kukri?
Think of it as the midway point between a sword and an axe. The kukri is an outdoorsman's tool sort of like the western billhook.
>why do people say swords are a meme,
Undereducated contrarianism and blowback from the "folded 1000 times can cut a tank in half" meme. They do have a point in that spears were probably more important in formation, but the sword was always useful as a more generalist sidearm.
You’re not a brainlet user. Everyone else that knows this shit are autistic.
>Tfw favorite meme weapon is the Scythe
>The only way to make it even halfway viable is to sharpen both sides but also be able to puncture things with the tip

It's easier to stab at gaps in armor than to slash at them. Thrusting is still really good against unarmored opponents (see: napoleon cavalry)
The flamberge is a meme, change my mind.

Hook swords weren’t common
Also I wouldn’t use a sword I’d use a mace or an axe because they were objectively better
Stabbing people in the face with flanged maces is one of the coolest things to do in KCD.
It’s just the best thing ever because of how wonderfully simple it is. Techniques for blunt weapons are easy to learn and they’re useful against every type of opponent. Axes are the same way.
Axes might be the coolest weapon ever made.
Nigga you could be the biggest cock in spain and you'd still be wishing you didn't have such a gay as buckler when the high as fuck Aztec flies out of the bush spinning a giant sharp log like a fucking top.
>objectively better
>rarely actually used
Hrm.
Who's /bardiche/ here?
Spearfags are the new katanafags.
The Model 1832 is the odd one out; it was issued to artillery regiments as a utility blade, not a combat sidearm. They weren't expected to get into melee, and would've used their rifle-bayonets if they got overrun anyway. As a matter of fact, any short-sword would be pretty useless as a close-combat weapon with no shield, fighting against opponents with polearms.
If you're going to carry a heavy weapon, why not just go all the way and carry a poleaxe or war-hammer? Even more power at even more distance would be less risky.
With the difference being spears have a far longer history and more practical combat utility than katanas, or swords in general. If you have a sword and I have a spear, you're in trouble unless you've got a shield and a nice set of armour.
>no bastard sword
What an unversatile, shit list.
Did you forget that the Conquistadors often wore steel plate and helmets in combat, which would shatter glass? Sure, you've still got the rest of the club to use, but even that's not going to easily batter through armour either, especially when the person wearing it is fighting back with STEEL blades.
No substitutes, Swiss rapiers all the way
>Raise the buckler
>Flimsy glass blades shatter
>Staggered a bit due to blunt force, but no real damage done
>Warrior promptly shot in the gut by your mate Pedro and speared for good measure
>Swiss rapiers

Heh...folded nippon steel has been used in japanese warfare for centuries. It's objectively the best weapon to ever exist! In fact, everything else may as well be fanfiction! Every duelist in history would fall before an untrained peasant wielding a katana; everyone to a trained one! The lightning speed they can be drawn makes them also the most practical weapon. If you have any other weapon and I have a katana...then well buddy... you're outta luck haahaa...
By the way...

I’m talking about real bastard swords, AKA Hand and a Half swords.
>people will unironically not choose the Claymore and still call themselves men in the year of our lord 2019
flamberge is alright too
Right.
Longswords.
and all of them and their users in this thread were laid down in the ground to a spear user. spear>sword to be historically accurate.
Longswords are two hand lengths, retard. Much more difficult to use one handed.
Bastard swords have a shorter handle, but still enough room to grip the pommel, unlike an arming sword.
no retard
spear formation > sword formation
spears are shit in duels
stabs don't have stopping power at all. i mean, if you hit the stomach or whatver he is gonna die, but in a hour. In the other hand you can remove limbs or break a skull with most cutting weapons. Believe me or not cutting is more effective against bone than stabbing, including skulls.
Spears/lances and polearms are weapons of war.
Swords are for personal defence. You’d still carry one on your person in case your main weapon breaks.
imagine being this dumb
Elizabethan use of "bastard" was more about blade length than handle length, and Oakeshott typology makes no real distinction between "hand and a half" and "two handed"
Bastard swords are longswords.
The problem is that by itself, any two-handed longsword/greatsword is always going to be beaten by a polearm, assuming both opponents have equivalent skill and protective gear. Doppelsoeldners of the 16th century armed with Zweihanders always fought in a unit with pikes, because their purpose was to support the pikemen by hacking away opposing spears and killing enemy spearmen while they were tangled in a push-of-pike. Of course, this meant they had the highest risk of dying in a battle, and thus received double-wages (hence the name).

Your assertions are 100% counter to then contemporary thinking.
Slashing swords were considered barbaric and useless because they had no stopping power, where as a good stab killed a man on the spot.
It got to the point where even people wielding cavalry sabres refused to sharpen anything but the tip.
Tonfa can BTFO every weapon on this list easy
Getting stabbed by a knife is a much different experience than being shafted by a pike that could be more than 10 feet long, with all the force and weight that implies. Good luck trying to fight with a barge-pole stuck through your ribs.
Slash beats impact which beats puncture which beats slash. Slashfags would get destroyed in terms of the OP because theres no hammer or blunt weapon option.
we are talking about estocs and rapiers here, polearms shits on every weapon posted in this thread
This. That's why French cavalry sabres were overall less efficient than the straighter ones used by British cavalry, because a gruesome slash isn't as immediately lethal as a direct shot to the organs. Refining the sabre to increase stabbing force eventually evolved rapier-esque blades like this:
Zweihander, because if you're going against pikes you might as well be able to counter attack 'em.

I was trying to refute his general assumption that 'stabbing' is less lethal than 'slashing' when common sense dictates that a vertically deeper wound is far more deadly than a horizontally wide one. You can survive a slash to your abdomen as long as you immediately bind the wound; a stab is more likely to hit arteries and vital organs, leading to swift or even immediate death long before medical attention. Rapiers were efficient civilian weapons for killing people who didn't wear steel plate; estocs were much heavier and longer affairs that were more like big spikes with handles than swords, with zero edge but an incredibly sharp point to puncture steel.

Swords were only fetishised by legends because they're a symbol of nobility and power, since only the upper crust could afford the amount of steel, time and craftsmanship needed to make a decent blade, then dedicate their lives to mastering it. They've always been to polearms what pistols are to rifles; good in a pinch if you've got nothing else, but not your first choice if you really want something dead. No soldier ever went to battle with only a sword, not until plate armour went extinct.
The funny thing is that agricultural flails (flail on a pole) were often used as weapons in Europe, and even hand-held flails weren't exactly uncommon as self-defence weapons in the 18th century, especially with all the religious violence of that era.
>No soldier ever went to battle with only a sword
reeaallly might want to think that statement through before committing, friend.
You're forgetting about units like the rodeleros.
For reference, this blog has an interesting bit on 'Protestant flails' which were analogous to Japanese nunchucks:

>muh real life choices
God, you fags are so boring.
It's situational really. On open battlefield? Polearm is the best. Interior battle or narrow-space environment? sword.
Fair point, though technically those soldiers aren't JUST carrying swords, they're also carrying shields to protect them from spears or even bullets.
>no urumi
Well if you're going to be that pedantic, then I will point out the Big Sword Units of the Sino-Japanese war.
Soldiers armed with literally nothing but a sword, because China was too poor to give them guns.
Depends on the 'narrow space'. In a corridor, one spearman could easily hold off a dozen swordsmen since they can't exactly be flanked. Same goes for foot-bridges.
>one spearman could easily hold off a dozen swordsmen since they can't exactly be flanked.
Yeah. But if said swordsman brought a Tower Shield then you're screwed.

Couple things, one, a wooden club can still bash in steel armor. Second, swords can't cut through thick wood, but they can get stuck in them. Wooden shields are effective against steel swords, so are clubs.
