I don't know if you're among the 1 in 1,000 who really cares about this sort of thing, but if you are and never got to see it, you have no idea what you missed. You used to be abe to walk around or sit in a pew and read graffiti from the 14th or 15th century. There were never enough inns in Paris, so during the pilgrimage season they'd let people sleep inside the Cathedral, and many would leave messages either in the pews (most of which were painted over) or carved into the columns.
Ofc ourse, if I had seen someone doing that when I was a grad student I'd have dragged them out by their ear but to read graffiti from...the time of the hundred years war was amazing. And the the chapels. If you as an individual or your guild paid for a channel, you got to be pictured in a small corner of the the bottom panel of the stained glass. So you'd see...the head of the baker's guild from the 12th century pictured with a basket of bread on the glass.

If you are White, try to go to Chartes this summer before they fucking burn that down too. charts also has even more incredible graffiti of the sort i was talking about earlier, much of it prayers asking God to ave a son, daughter, mother, whatever and vowing to do something in addition to the pilgrimage they've just made. There's actually a really good PBS documentary on the building of Cathedrals from the late 70s that also gets into a number of finished ones.
