The tower system is a perfectly fine chassis of a system to unlock cosmetics through, especially since instead of being random, it tells you up front the specific cosmetics you'll get for any tower or tower-group you're going to do, and most towers will give you half a dozen or more cosmetics for the specific character that tower's themed around. There is no RNG, there are 600 chests with all the same loot for everybody, the only difference is, the Koin chests have a random layout. There are still a good amount of chests that are static, you can look up what chest has what in them if you really want.
The only real problem here is shit Tower difficulty balancing and slightly low payout. Fix those two things and the Krypt will be a standard affair. Spend on the krypt and save up your crystals for those couple things you absolutely NEED without ever spending an extra dime on the game.

Koins are spent in the krypt to unlock chests that give you skins. Towers give you 5k-35k koins each plus the 300-400 coins from winning each match. Chests in the krypt cost 2k to 15k to open. The actual problem with the progression was how overtuned the towers were which made them incredibly difficult to complete.
