The first six are all Pokemon that share some traits that are simply intrinsic to being fish or bugs but aren't really representative of growth. Remoraid is specifically an evolution of going from a gun to a tank. The G/S beta leaks further confirm it by showing the original designs for Remoraid and Octillery.

Venonat's a fucking gnat. It's in the name and the design, alongside the fact it's poisonous (hence veno-) whereas Butterfree is, shocker, a butterfly that simply has the traits of "Bug" and "Can fly" resulting it being Bug/Flying.

that's not even close to the similarities that venonat and butterfree have.

Venonat clearly looks more like a woolly caterpillar, which is commonly the larva of moths and not butterflies. Caterpie looks more like a cartoony caterpillar, is called caterpi llar and is therefore more expected to become a butterfly instead of a moth; one could argue that it's based on the hawk moth caterpillar, but most species of hawk moths just so happen to also look like cartoony caterpillars with oversized heads, which in caterpie also happens to be it's actual head and not a disguise (and it happens to be actually based on the spice bush and black swallowtail caterpillars anyway).
