Where else would you go from there? I feel like DMC5 kind of screwed Nero over, story-wise. If Nero only fought his own enemies rather than the same enemies as Dante, then he'd still have room for growth meaning there can still be challenges for him to overcome in the future. But Nero ends DMC5 with a fight against one of the two strongest beings in DMC's universe, Vergil. So I guess that means that he's stronger than Mundus now, too. So where can he go from there? Have each subsequent game bullshit a new enemy even stronger than the last? The first game ended with the defeat of the king of hell. DMC5 ended with the defeat of someone even stronger than the former king of hell. That's it. Nero has nothing left at the moment. Every single enemy he faces from this point on will be as beneath him as Argosax was to Dante in DMC2.

Dante has largely ran out of room to grow from a story stand-point, I understand why they want to be done with him, but he should always be around just for his gameplay. Nero makes a lot of sense to go with but there will be a lot of resistance from fans if you really shaft Dante for him, as there has been in the past. Both old and new fans would largely be happy with a game that focused on Vergil as the protagonist with Dante and Nero as supporting characters. Not only that, but there is a lot for him from a story perspective. He has just come to terms with his humanity and finally has people in his life who care about him. I don't want some faggot slice of life shit all the cringelords in these threads post. But you can have a game about him feeling the need to atone for his past actions, learning to be a good person and attempting to become just like his father in a way that Sparda himself would be proud of.
I mean it writes himself. Have Mundus return as the primary antagonist, give Vergil conflict in having to resist the urge to go back to his old ways due to the emotional trauma Mundus brings out within him and becoming consumed with the desire for revenge for his mother. I don't want him to go back to being an asshole, I want to see him struggle with attempting not to and, ultimately, coming out triumphant.
We also need a scene where Vergil cries. It's Devil May Cry. Dante and Nero have cried. A single manly tear from Vergil over something emotional would be kino.

I would agree, as a sole protagonist. A lot of Vergil's strength as a character comes from the fact that he has never needed to say much in order for you to understand him or for him to be a "deep" nuanced character. When you make a game around him it would be hard, because if you keep him in character he's largely going to be a silent autist for 8 hours doing largely nothing outside of killing shit.
But I think it would work with the supporting cast of Nero and Dante. As well as very slowly and subtlety changing his character and have him learn to express himself more and be less guarded. The final cutscene in DMC5 is a perfect example of this. Listen to the performance Dan gives as Vergil in that cutscene. His voice and mannerisms are very different, a lot more unguarded. Because Vergil no longer feels the need to protect himself, because he's no longer alone. Just expand on these aspects of his character. Give him some subtle bonding with his son and ultimately have it that he ends up being the descendant of Sparda that kills Mundus for good, something Dante and Sparda himself could never do. I think that would bring his redemption full circle, have him become a protector of humanity, just like his father was for thousands of years.
Of all the characters in the series, outside of Sparda, Vergil is the most connected to Mundus and has the most reason to be the one to defeat him. He's the one who has lost the most. He lost his mother, had to fend for himself against countless demon attacks as a child, alone. He lost himself for like 20 years, he never got to see his son grow up, etc...

The best way to move forward with Nero, in my opinion, is to introduce a character that can act as his eternal rival. That is what he is missing the most.
If I were in charge of the story and I was going ahead with what I've posted, I'd have a sub-plot about Mundus having had a half-human child after being defeated by Dante in DMC1. Solely because he saw how powerful a human/demon hybrid is.
There would be a lot you could do with a character like that. As I said, he'd ultimately be Nero's rival from that game onwards and survive the game. What shade of good/evil he would be I'm not so sure. I would have him initially be working for Mundus, but also coming to terms with the fact that he's nothing but a product of an evil demon who desires power above all else.

Vergil always play like shit. In 3 he's an awkward glass canon with not as much depth compared to Dante and in 4SE he was a rushed copy pasted move unga bunga low IQ character with full screen clear moves.
Capcom designed Nero and Dante to be fun playable character from the ground up, culminating in 5's iteration of both character. Vergil is never designed to be playable character, even in 3SE he's a retooled boss character with limited moves who struggle against a lot of enemies not designed for him. Capcom knows they cannot make parity between makeshift boss character turned PC compared to the complexity of Dante and Nero in 5, so it is better to not do it rather than giving us another half assed player character
