4 failed in terms that people didn't want him at first, since Capcom pushed the 'Dante is evil now' marketing and because he was far too limited in terms of gameplay.
In writing terms the only real problems with him were too much 'muh Kyrie', but at least you got the very clear impression that he cares about her, and Dante shows that he earned his trust by giving him Yamato, and a little arc about him having problems with his arm/demon heritage and finally accepting it at the end.
It isn't well executed, deep, or anything. But it is completely fine, unless you're willing to point out some significant flaw

Minimum effort from what we have would be changing the pacing, so Vergil is restored much earlier and has a little bit of time to come to terms with things.
My main problem with Vergil in 5 is that he doesn't show any indication of character progression after being merged with V, who openly says that his quest for power was mad and evil.
He is just restored, and immediately wants to kill Dante again when he is at full power until the very end where Nero beats him and they have this awkward deal about Nero beating him meaning he can't kill Dante. Nor does he really show remorse or shock for ripping off Nero's arm, when in 3 he shows a lot of reverence for his own father. I'd have imagined that him doing that to his own son would have shocked him in 3, at least.

Giving Vergil a few moments of shock, remorse rather than just sitting at the top of tree waiting for Dante, something/someone to help Nero/Dante with would have helped the story a lot.

She was tied directly to the core of the thing for whatever reason.

Nero's one who create Blue rose, which should make it clearly that he also engraved the blue rose design and other lines onto his gun. So he did have some artistic senses.

If he actually changed and underwent some actual redemption, then why does he only care about fighting and killing Dante?
The only thing that you might think indicates change is that he doesn't kill Dante while Dante is weak from the fight with Urizen 3, but Vergil never was the type to assassinate people, even in DMC1 it is pointed out that mind controlled Vergil is honorable, and his point for not fighting Dante there is to prove who is stronger once and for all, and killing a weak Dante wouldn't have done that.
The only thing remaining is the post-credits sequence with him having a cool time with Dante in hell, which I would certainly like, if it wasn't merely the result of a rather awkward deal with Nero.
