Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way about that scene. The yell at the end of it was terrible, but the rest wasn't really bad acting, it just didn't work for the cutscene.
Hopefully next game they get better directors (or even better, bring back the people who directed XB1) and make sure the VAs get to see the cutscenes they're recording for.

It was something like 40 people at Monolithsoft+outsourcing. The English voice work was handled by NoE, so I don't the staff limitations at Monolith had all that much of an effect.
If anything, I'd wager that a lot of the awkwardness came from it being Monolith's first simultaneous dub.

I did, though? There's a sizable chunk of the game where stutter-stepping to get arts up faster is viable because you don't start with them unlocked until you unlock that on the skill tree.

Rex is a clown, a buffoon, naive as fuck, but pulls through when it matters. For edgy teenagers seeing him being a bumbling awkward fool makes them SEETHE and makes them wish superchad #158195 was the MC instead.

In general I do think it was the voice direction in this game that was bad, he’s a competent actor. It’s also possible he might be a bad VA though, haven’t seen him do other voice work, just acting.

My mistake was thinking that video games are art: I wanted to make this game about a guy who's a piece of shit unlikable character who by the end of the game has to transform. But too many gamers when they look at this-when they play a game-they're so used to having to identify with the character, that if they play a game where the main character's unlikable or has to do some bad stuff, they immediately get triggered by it. So the thing is, games aren't art; they're toys for children and it's considered in bad form to talk about anything meaningful or thought provoking.

I didn’t say his acting in the game was good. I agree it was shit. I’m saying the actor in question isn’t shit, even if his voice work in this game was shit. There are circumstances beyond the actors themselves, Xenoblade 2, by all accounts, had a rushed and half assed dub across the board, which usually points to voice direction being the problem.

All I said was Al Weaver has done good work, and he has, even if Xenoblade 2 isn’t among that list.

I'm more flabbergasted by the hate he gets. He has like one scene where he's awful (I LOVE ALL YOU GUYS) but other than that I thought he was serviceable, great at times even. His meeting with the architect is honestly a damn good moment and sells the character and its place in the story well. Yeah he's a generic protagonist, but who the fuck ISN'T a generic protagonist? It's very rare to get a protagonist who isn't generic, especially in videogames.

I don't think he was an amazing character but some people actively come off as butthurt about his existence and I find it kind of funny and confusing.

I mostly found him inoffensive and boring. The scene you mentioned and a couple others in the last three chapters were good, but otherwise I didn't really care about him.
