Based. 64 is overrated as fuck.

agreed except for Rareware who understood the hardware better than nintendo ever could

they both suck
/thread

This is just falseflag bullshit designed to make Spyrofags look bad. There's no reason to argue over two games that are 20 years old, barely play the same, and even both have subpar remakes that could be shitposted about instead.

Besides, anybody with a frontal lobe knows Banjo Kazooie was the superior platforming game.

Everytime when someone says "Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are on my top 10's!" I want to cave their fucking skull in. Why are these games always considered so "great"?

A Shame spyros gameplay doesnt hold a candle to 64

I'd love if Spyro was even half as acrobatic as Mario.

I think we can all agree on this at least.

Attached: 1555687967902.jpg (1256x582, 216K)

Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Earthbound are fucking gay.

I don't get the praise for the Zelda at all. The few I played I didn't dislike, but I don't see what makes OoT or MM so highly regarded. They're just good at best.

Because they played them as kids

probably mostly gameplay reasons.

Aesthetically megaman legends and rare games hold up the best from that time

Attached: 1555923773163.gif (500x375, 1.21M)

i want those earrings haha

It exists, the reason you see people using games that utilize beautifully made sprites is because limitations usually result in creative work. I could understand why that pic was made, I think 64 has some fantastic gameplay elements, but the levels can get really empty.

same,i finished oot a few days ago,it was a good game but that's it,same as dark souls, good game, not the best of all time by a long shot

Majora's Mask is the best one but it doesn't exactly have stiff competition. People like Zelda because it has easy had-holding puzzles that make people think they're playing a game. Most Zelda games are as much walking sims as Dear Ester

OoT I felt was really fun to play, it was easy to get into and offered a lot of content. I'm pretty sure nostalgia has a huge grip on OoT since it was a solid first 3D Zelda entry.

MM on the other hand I think took what made OoT good and experimented with it offering some cool groundhog day mechanics. I loved being able to see how the town's residents go about their days simultaneously to each other and how interacting with them on different points of the 3-days changes. It was also a great example on how to re-use assets properly as the game was VERY different tonally and aesthetically.

All that being said, I could understand why it might not be your cup of tea. They both had some rough points that could've been polished a bit more.

Vidya soul exist but Yea Forums just use it to shitpost in a "X BAD, Y GOOD" sort of way

For example this is "POPULAR BAD, LESS POPULAR GOOD" and many times it's "NEW BAD OLD GOOD"

You're a dude, aren't you?

Currently playing OoT and played mario 64. The cameras are shit but they are great. Definitively not the best though.

>"every single character had personality"

uh

no

a lot of the dragons just said "thank you for releasing me" and then disappeared

Ape Escape is the actual ultimate PS1 platformer

You're trying to cherrypick your stupid soul bullshit and you choose the ugliest Spyro 1 screenshot you could possibly find. I don't even think that's the correct coloring.

Based.

didn't this whole soul/soulless may may start with some zoomer thinking Donkey Kong Country looked like shit compared to pixel graphics?

>mario 64
intricate parkour mechanics that takes weeks to master
>spyro
LOL I CAN JUST JUMP AND GLIDE ANWHERE EZ

>implying DKC isn't the worst looking SNES game
don't boomers and zoomers agree on this?

Bruh, i hate nintendo but M64 was the frist 3d game ever, give it some credit

It kicked into full swing when the Spyro remake was announced last year, faggots started nitpicking every individual screenshot, thereby ensuring that any discussion on Yea Forums of either remakes in general or the Spyro games was ruined forever.

>first 3D game
This is your mind on Nintendo

youtube.com/watch?v=bF_a6qMeWP8

"Soul/Soulless" is just another couple of buzzwords Yea Forums started using to shit on games without having to come up with valid criticisms. If you do use those terms unironically then you're a problem.

>this attempt at starting shitflinging again

Mario, Spyro, Crash, Banjo, Rayman, etc. are all great, fuck off.

Attached: 1550482523080.jpg (184x184, 13K)

Mario 64 DS could have had so much soul if it had had co-op like we see now with the various mods to the 64 version.

>Posts on Yea Forums

Nah, bro. That's totally a girl(male)

I think any game where you can see the creators live put into it, has soul

I don't really see that in any of the """classics""""

Ironically the most soul I ever saw in a game was sengoku Rance which was a celebration of everything Alice soft ever made

That feels a lot more like soul to me than Fucking spyro

Attached: images (7).jpg (191x264, 10K)

Go fuck yourself, stop trying to start shit.

>looked bad for its time
>only popularized existing concepts and tech

Mario 64 was one of the first 3D platformers, and the first good 3D platformer you fucking zoomer. It set the standard for 3D platformers at the time and was a good looking game.

I don't give a fuck if you like the game or not, but these "points" are objectively false

>Nostalgia
>Nostalgia

fixed

Mario 64 DS will be one of the definitive gameplay experiences, assuming that analog control mod ever gets finished.

Go to bed Miyamoto.

>SOUL vs soulless
>Subway shitposting
>that fucking guy who shot up a mosque mentioning Spyro

Is there any series as cursed as Spyro on Yea Forums? It is almost impossible to have a normal conversation about the series at this point.

It's real. It has a lot to do with how we perceive older graphics and how charming they were. Spyro 1 for example was a very calm, relaxed game with a nice atmosphere born from old graphics and a good OST. I can completely understand why some would see the remakes as "soulless" in comparison. It's very difficult to recapture that magic.

A more recent example, in my own personal case, would be Demon's Souls vs Dark Souls. To me, Demon's has a way better atmosphere and overall better "feel" despite Dark Souls 1 and 2 also belonging to the same generation. It's that "thing" that is often very hard to pinpoint exactly what it is, but more often than not it's a mix of gameplay, sound and atmosphere.

>antialiasing on right
OH NO NO NO NO NO

Not understanding how m64 stood its own weight way after banjo and spyro released is the ultimate pleb flag. Those games are great on their own right but didn't manage to replicate what makes m64 so fundamentally good.

Controlling Mario is intrinsecally fun. The movement options and physics are on spot and it feels so good they can carry the game by their own. They're all avaliable from the start and there's no more collectibles than the star maguffins because you don't need much of an excuse to try and get to the top of the mountain no matter how many times.

I love banjo but it has aged way worse gameplaywise than m64. The graphics, setting and dialogues are great but controlling banjo is like driving a loaf of bread in comparison. Tried to get into spyro a couple of years ago and it was even more stiff. Nostalgia is definitely not the only reason we still get 3D mario games.

Attached: oldcontemptdude.jpg (511x471, 152K)

Summer forest, and Hurricos (maybe) are the only ones that represented what the aesthetics were about. The rest are just a meme.

I will never not be upset over aquaria towers, the level had color choices that, while underwater-themed, still were varied. The remake one is just "tint everything blue and fuck palettes!". It's so fucking bad.

For some weird and unexplained reason, the levels on the third hubworld look all amazing, but the rest of the Spyro 2 sucks in comparison.

OLD PIECE OF SHIT I LIKE GOOD

OLD PIECE OF SHIT U LIKE BAD

Do you even have to ask?

Attached: 1546297455215.jpg (900x900, 46K)

This picture is retarded. It basically boils down to "I don't like this one, so it doesn't have soul!"

Are you retarded? Soul has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself.

Let's be real here OP, this isn't about Bing Bing or fagons, you're just trying to dredge up some decades old console war bullshit.

>emulator
kys

That screenshot still looks miles better than the majority of Mario 64

Attached: gfs_28034_2_186.jpg (640x480, 26K)

What do you have against Spyro? Why are you trying to cause trouble in his name by using retarded buzzwords?

Attached: 1519283198936.jpg (684x381, 30K)

"Soul" is what your brain substitutes to make up for the low quality graphics from the past.

If the creator didn't create his art with this in mind, your brain substitutes some random thing that may or may not fit with the atmosphere and feeling of the game. This is soulless.
If the creator accounted for that in his art, his art will have a direction, a purpose, like reading between the lines of a good book. It has a good style, it knows what it is and doesn't pretend otherwise. It's in tune with it's theme and atmosphere. Our brains are able to catch glimpses of this artistic magnetism. This is soulful.

Looking at it like this, stories can be soulful and soulless aswell. I think it applies to art in general.

this has to be bait, there were loads of 3D games before mario 64.

>Game has egregious design flaws
>you completely overlook them for some reason

I think that may count as soul.

>3D console game that came out in 1998 looks better than 3D console game that came out in 1996
Fuckin no way man

Attached: 1440153968889.gif (320x240, 1.45M)

Oh boy I hope this doesn't spiral into the same thread for the two hundredth time with people bringing up Crash Bandicoot with the same exact rebuttals and shitposts.

cringe

The SOUL/SOULLESS thing is used by dumb fuckers who are too simple to properly articulate why a game's aesthetics appeal to them.

Pic related, it's (You).

Attached: 1511466205154.png (512x384, 271K)

If only Spyro's gameplay wasn't boring as a shit

Good memory, I had forgotten about that.

>taking the bait this hard

Mario 64 is genuinely not any better. Collectathons are basic as hell and tedious, there's a reason they died off. We only even got a couple indie titles and some remasters because normies are riding the late '90s nostalgia wave.

Also keeping in mind both were designed the way they were because of the capabilities and limitations of the hardware they were on.
Not every choice involved was deliberate, so much as necessary/conformal.

>there's a reason they died off
They didn't, they just turned into open world games. Assassin's Creed in particular always reminded me of collectathons.

For the last time, no, neither vidya soul nor the human soul exist. Both are cases of retards being incapable of explaining and discerning certain phenomena and giving it magical explanations to give their stupid brains a break.

Lol it's the same utter retard from the Qud thread. How do you even breathe?

which thread?

can you faggots stop using shitty emulators please
mednafen is fucking free. use it

When anons on Yea Forums say "Soul" they just mean "good art direction"

>dithering
yikes

based retard

Attached: Spyro the Dragon (USA)-0002.png (960x720, 999K)

Holy shit than you OP

Never knew what it was about Mario 64 but it always felt "empty" even playing it as a kid

Spyro on the other hand has genuine soul and its brilliant to this day

High IQ post right here

I played the remake for the Dragons ťbh. I don't even like platformers

>Mario 64, 1996
>Spyro, 1998

Wow user, you really showed me with that one entire pic made up of shitposting!
You should have used Crash instead, would have been alot less obvious

is cybershell alive?

Attached: wet feels.jpg (645x773, 231K)

>spyro released 2 years after mario 64 and likely took strong inspiration from it
nice b8 m8

>Collectathons
>Died off
They turned into the shit open world games we have today. Just, instead of focusing on platforming, they focus on shitty ''action'' combat and shooting instead.
They were honestly better as platformers, since exploration based platforming will always be more fun than diablo ''click to do everything'' bullshit ''combat'', ''CoD+WoW now with even more scripted gameplay and timegating!'' and ''BAHAM'' combat.

There was a thread a day or two ago where some user said his twitter account favorited a tweet or something. Pretty sure I heard some autist on reddit stalked him to the point of calling his home phone and asking the person who answered if he was okay.

These have absolutely nothing to do with the points being made in the OP

shut the fuck up low iq zoomer

Ok then, lets just compare pong to mario tennis then? Isn't that fair?

what are some recent (2015 or after) games with soul?

Attached: 1534794565505.png (741x568, 29K)

>"no unified visuals"
>"looks bad for the time"
>"characters have no personality"
>use of 2D sprites

Based

Yeah, let's, Pong has tons of soul while Mario Tennis is a soulless cash grab spinoff.

Again, nothing to do with the point, all of those could have been done better with effort to be on par with the later Spyro, except they weren't because Nintendo didn't care.

Don't listen to the mean old contrarian Yea Forums shitposters, Reignited had plenty of soul.

Attached: fairy.png (1920x1080, 1.99M)

>459661834
>Yeah, let's, Pong has tons of soul while Mario Tennis is a soulless cash grab spinoff.
No (you) 4 U!
Thanks for the laugh though, you can stop shitposting now

You remind me of a Youtube comment I saw where some kid said Star Fox SNES shouldn't have come out because nowadays it looks bad.

OLD GOOD
NEW BAD

But they're both old and shitty tho

You remind me of someone who can't discern lack of effort and technological limitations.

Attached: 1554744244500.png (800x1350, 310K)

>complains about an N64 game taking shortcuts while saying a PS1 game had effort put into it
>spyro looks fantastic
ahahahaha

The quickest answer is that Spyro didn’t need acrobatics like Mario. It plays 100% as good as it should it be.
not to mention spyro is a dragon which shouldn’t be acrobatic OR easy to control

He's not hard to control anyways. The jumping and gliding and charging around in Spyro is smooth and fun as fuck. I've even seen people try and bullshit that it has tank controls.

>banjo pooie
>good and not nostalgia
I see nothing in that game that wasn't done than better in conker or m64
The platforming in banjo is bland as fuck there is no challenge in it whatsoever and 3/4ths of the levels in the entire first game are these shitty sandbox domes where it's just hop on platforms on the side wall twice look for jiggies with a mediocre boss rinse and repeat
I'll never understand the shills for this series

You've never actually enjoyed anything have you?

You'll shit on Banjo's platforming while defending fucking Conker? That game barely even qualifies as a platformer, it's 80% gimmicks with some mediocre platforming in-between.

they're both garbage games and yet people care more about super mario 64 than some literal who
cope with it spyrofags

Attached: 1537769780955.png (361x691, 172K)

Games use to be about product, now they're more focused on profit

Soul is just some stupid shit you made up to convince yourself that the games you liked were better than the newer games other people like. Companies exist to make a profit and they do that by making games. The reason you think older games have soul is because you grew up on them and didn't realize massive corporations made it because they wanted your money. Now you're jaded and cynical from being on Yea Forums all day so you complain about games being soulless like it's an actual argument

Games were always about profit.

Retard
The ONLY thing Conker did that was better than other 3D platformers of the era was writing and story. The platforming in Conker was horrible and done better in Banjo-Kazooie, the racing was done better in Diddy Kong Racing, the shooting segments were done better in Goldeneye and PD, the vehicle segments were done better in Blast Corps, and the swimming was done better in Banjo-Tooie. Conker is still an extremely enjoyable game but to say its gameplay is better than anything that it is comparable to is just plain wrong.

because they were over-hyped 3D games that were baby's first entry to the series == nolstalgia
2D zelda has always been better than the 3D trash like OoT and BotW. Mario Odyssey seems bretty gud though
