Why does Kingdom hearts get shit for having cheezy writing?

It's not that KH has "cheesy writing", it's that KH has shit writing.

Look, I love my shit with cheese, some of my favorite games of all time are cheesy as hell, see most of the Tales games or Bayonetta. It's also not an issue of it being overly complicated either, since you can follow if it.

The issue here is KH is written like it was a made by a fucking teenager who took one philosophy class. KH is so up its own ass with messages and lore it forgets to have fun with the concept or take advantage of it. and the times it does comes off as aggressively juvenile who barely understands the source material it was trying to emulate.

So it ultimately feels like the worst of Disney and Square squeezed into a single package.

DMC: not taking story anime shit seriously, srtiving for highscore gamplay with pretty nice combat.
KH: taking goofy anime story too serious, pretty bland gameplay.

I haven't played DMC, but Kingdom Hearts' writing is too self-indulgent. Even in KH3 where the series is more willing to poke fun at itself. You can't just have a character go on a long monologue about how "The heart of my sentient body can live anywhere! Even inside data!" and just treat it 100% seriously without it feeling awkward.

I once heard someone say that "nobody takes the story of KH as seriously as someone who hates the games". And honestly I think there's a grain of truth there. Most of the fans don't (in my experience) claim that KH has the best writing after all

You clearly weren't around pre-KH3 launch, there were tons of people saying the story was great and everyone who didnt like it was just a brainlet who didnt understand.

I suppose but KH itself cares about its story and deeply. It's a heavily story driven game and as such must be criticized that way. Just because fans "don't care about it" doesn't really change that fact ans if anything it just further highlights that the writing is so poor that people who enjoy the franchise themselves don't enjoy the writing or plot.

If KH was like Mario were the story is intentionally made to have the absolute minimum then yeah, over-criticism of it would be silly but this isn't the case.

DMC has consistent themes of family and how your bloodline doesn't define who you are as a person
Kingdom Hearts has no actual themes, just the bullshit of Light vs Dark bullshit nomura thinks is deep

I sincerely don't understand how anyone could've played KH and thought the writing was good. The games are great and the plot is a hell of a ride and batshit insane, but if you went in for story you're gonna be massively disappointed.

The biggest part of it being that every Kingdom Hearts game has like 14 worlds, with maybe 4-5 of them having anything to do with the actual plot. You have an intro sequence that sets up the game and then all the plot happens at the end in the climax sequence. The rest of the game consists of disney worlds of varying quality where the villains occasionally show up to publicly masturbate about how you're falling into their trap. The plot isn't the main attraction here.

DMC, unlike KH, doesn't takes itself too seriously. When Dante sees something stupid, he laughs at it and makes a one-liner or some shit. When Sora does it, he mopes about it, does a friendship speech and pulls a new power out his ass to save his friends.

DMC isn't as plot-driven. Pretty much every DMC game has a simple premise of "go to place X, evil guy did something evil, go stop it". There are some small deviations, but it mostly follows a straight line to the end and cutscenes are used to build characters instead of developing or changing the plot. KH never shuts up about its plot and pulls plot twists just for the sake of it, and when they SHOULD be building character (like, say, BbS) they don't. It says a lot when fans prefer the simplistic KH1 plot to the convoluted, unfocused BbS/KH3 plots.

Finally, DMC keeps a small roster of characters, locations and keeps its lore focused, reason why it's more friendly to outsiders. KH's lore spans way too many characters over many games and too many locations and it makes it harder for someone with no prior knowledge to follow it, leading to lenghty cutscenes like the ones in KH3 filled with characters explaining prior events for newcomers, while in DMC things can be explained in like 5 minutes tops.

Because KH consistently has garbage writing that has plot hole after plot hole and contradictions up the ass.
