Is Unreal1 worth playing?
Is Unreal1 worth playing?
No but Hexen: Beyond Heretic is
no
Unreal was fucking incredible when it came out. No game had graphics like it and it's level design is great.
It's a 'play once and probably never touch it again' game though.
You'll shit your pants the first time you meet a Skaarj, I guarantee it.
No it wasnt incredible when it came out, Tim
you clearly werent alive back then.
I want to marry Anna Kendrick
>graphics
I'll give you that
>level design
nope
It's fun, I've played it more than once, but I think some of the weapons aren't that great.
Absolutely. The atmosphere and music are magical. Levels are lovely to look at, have great progression and variety. Combat still stands out thanks to the arsenal and skaarj behavior.
Why does she have no boobs but then
have boobs here?
is her ass worth sniffing?
most definitely
*cute mouse noises*
Tiananmen Square Massacre 1989
Jewish tricks.
anna is cute
This, it's by far the best classic FPS, shits all over id and Valve.
yes it's an absolute classic with great atmosphere and stellar music
shit taste
I do a run through it at least once a year. Go for it, but don't get turned off by the first few levels. They're really bad about killing you with environmental hazards.
basically the best soundtrack in the history of sountracks
game itself is meh, play unreal tournament instead
basically every time the game throws endless waves of bullet sponges your way, and you're running low on Flak ammo and missing those Razorjack headshots Brandon's or van den Boss's music kicks in and suddenly everything is fine
look at this dumb rat
its one of the best games ever. huge varied levels. its a wild ride begging to end
literal definition of a game made by programmers who made a tech demo but can't design a video game to save their lives
enough said that if you say "unreal" nowadays, people will think about the engine instead of the game
It is, the game is truly an FPS journey more than any other.
No. It's very slow and boring.
>assblasted quakefag
Not every game should be about jumpy jumpy shooty pooty.
>boring
>an exotic world filled with alien lifeforms and cool locations
there's so many good moments in this game, it's peak atmosphere
It's a wonderful journey through a hostile alien world stuck between Nali's medievil villages temples and castles and Skaarj' high-tech installations and modifications.
you make a good point about movement speed there
quake has strafe jumping, and it would've been amazing on huge mostly barren unreal maps
UT2004 has dodge jumping, so you can still go fast
unreal has nothing to speed it up, maybe sideways dodging everywhere and firing blaster alt fire under your feet
>UT2004 has dodge jumping, so you can still go fast
And that shitty design decision made it impossible to have good singleplayer mods, movement ended up being floaty with small weapons and playermodels pretty much made impossible to have the same atmosphere, Unreal and UT were supposed to be always more grounded games.
UT is gladiatorial combat sport of 3000 AD or whatever, champ is a fucking robot/cyborg and every combatant is jacked up on drugs, cybernetics and some are clinically dead even
Unreal is more grounded in that you're a lone survivor escaped prisoner but by n ature of it being a 90s FPS you're a one man/woman army anyway
>Bunnyhoppping around sacred temple of chriza and Sunspire while going HUH HUH like a mongolod.
Way to destroy the atmosphere, not every shooter wanted or needed to be quake.
I'm sorry, I'm sure it looked really impressive compared to quake 2's claustrophobic orange-brown military bases back in the day, but right now the smaller levels of unreal look the best with colored lighting and the open levels look like absolute shit with 3.5 polygons relegated to the terrain
no I don't wanna walk for 5 minutes admiring all the repeating textures, you goddam right QUAKE aged a hell of a lot better with its man-machine interface tighter than your mom's puritan asshole controls and an art style that might as well be 3D pixel art and glorious trent reznor sound design/OST
not that guy but idk man, 90s/00s lowpoly is timeless imo, unreal looks fine to me
it is as long as you know your limitations
Carmack knew what his engine could and couldn't do
Epic just went "fuck the other guy" and made levels as huge and open as they could to be different, and a lot of it aged like milk
cant say i agree, sure it's aged but when i actually play it im immersed just the same as before thanks to the atmosphere and level design
serious sam wipes its ass with unreal's graphics for example, released 2 years later
yes but serious has nowhere near as good art direction
Valve didn't know their limitations with Half Life either, taking quake as a base kneecapped the entire game from AI to level design
yeah I guess you're right there, but both games are essentially tech demos so it's neat to compare/contrast teh two
Things like atmosphere don't age, stop being an ADHD pleb who can't immerse himself into an universe if it requires you some patience to do so, Unreal is still far superior in terms of enemy AI and setting. Different games with different focus, quake is an arcade, action shooter, unreal is a journey focused more on exploration.
no, unreal is great but that title belongs to Quake II.
youtube.com
quake has a strong atmosphere
unreal has a gorgeous soundtrack and inventive weapons that really shine in multiplayer. I don't dig unreal atmosphere, sorry. Does nothing for me.
>generic industrial rock/metal
Good ost aren't limited to a single genre.
ye
I like quetwo's OST, but it's a downgrade from quake 1
unreal is head and shoulders above both
my biggest problem with unreal is how spongy every enemy is on higher difficulties and how Skaarj AI makes hitscan weapons the best when they're the most boring
game could've used more flak ammo and more consistent ASMD combo feedback, a problem shared with UT99
dumb nerds unreals ost fit it but no where near as close as quake II ost did nothing beats gibbing strogg niggers with the super shotgun while kill ratio is playing in the background
youtube.com
sorry bruh, by metal standards Q2 ost is generic forgetable trash, only gets a pass cause it's uncommon in vidya and is one of the better ones
Atmosphere is not just the graphics, the game pretty much details what each race of enemies and creatures you face is doing on that planet without using cinematics and has them located in places that would make sense in an alien world, quake levels are designed around gameplay putting creatures that have no reason to be there at all but to be obstacles. Quake has mazes and dungeons, Unreal levels are all designed to be something that could actually have a purpose or sense outside of being a game level, its clear to see which game has a more strong focus on world building. Both games just aren't comparable.
It was.
Too old, not the best ui and controls. I wasnt able to configure it for comfortable play. UT'99 came 1 year later and it was much better.
I wish they make Unreal remake some day.
>generic peace loving noble injun race
>has 4 arms and 4 nipples, very original
>generic lizard thing that flies around and attacks you for no reason
>some kind of octopus limpet that lives on the cieling and spits shit at you
>a fucking fish
>generic mayan inspired temples for half the game
>predator rip off warrior race
wow much detail, such atmosphere
Her deepfakes are the best.
>An entire series of maps that details the belief system and morals of an alien race
>Another series of maps dedicated to detail the purpose of the mercenary race, their way to operate and their rivalry with another alien forces you face
>An entire episode dedicated to the main enemy alien race showing the kind of technology they posses and hierarchy.
Compared to..
>You are generic strong, angry man in another dimension, kill anything that goes in front of you.
Uh-huh. okay.
sorry man, doesn't hold a candle to system shock 2 or Thief gold/Thief 2 if you're talking emergent/environment story telling
hell even half life did it better
quake has a throwaway handwave story by design, cause it wasn't its story that made doom a hit and why fix what aint broke
>quake has a throwaway handwave story by design, cause it wasn't its story that made doom a hit and why fix what aint broke
Which is exactly why both can't be compared. Quake is an arcade shooter, Unreal is an exploration fps. A quite rare genre.
Then it's the wrong game for me, huh. If you talk exploration FPS then I love my stalker, unreal is a weird transitory artifact that has slightly too much effort put into it to be a tech demo and slightly too little to be a compelling "exploration FPS", as an old school early 3D 90s FPS it's just not exceptional in any way except its graphics, multiplayer bot AI and GUNS that still kick ass.
very boring game, couldn't finish it. You have some nice atmospheric outdoors levels and then really boring and confusing space base and temple levels. There's really no thought put into weapons and enemies and their spheres, it's like oh some alien, just shoot it with whatever weapon you have equipped. Feels like they just put in random enemies at random spots. Many enemies are annoying faggots that dart around like they're on crack. Others they just shoot some projectiles at you. Too much ammo for everything, no reason to think what weapon you should use on which enemy. Yet another pointless inventory mechanic in the wake of Heretic/Hexen and Duke 3d. It's obviously a tech demo, it does look and sound good but the gameplay feels very uninspired. As an exploratory, atmospheric shooter it loses to Hexen and Quake 2, since they have good gameplay in addition to an engaging atmosphere.
transitional artifact* I should say
>as an old school early 3D 90s FPS it's just not exceptional in any way except its graphics, multiplayer bot AI and GUNS that still kick ass
And having the most rich and varied representation of an alien world in a shooter till today, it's called Unreal for the right reason, it's just feels like another world.
>As an exploratory, atmospheric shooter it loses to Hexen and Quake 2, since they have good gameplay in addition to an engaging atmosphere.
Both games with incredibly boring theme, awful AI and weapons which feel pretty uninspired compared to anything Unreal has to offer.
I disagree. I don't think unreal's alien world is anything to write home about. It's neither rich nor varied, just medieval castles mainly.
here's your (You), now suck my cock you whore
Single player FPS is one of the worst genres imo.
It was impressive as fuck.
They really went balls out with the colored lighting in places. Cut all the outdoors areas for a much better game, ironically. Should've been a game about spelunking like Arx Fatalis lmao
has decent multiplayer, and an entire multiplayer focus expansion packed called UNREAL TOURNAMENT
>Ancient Temples
>Villages
>Different kind of spaceships with varied designs and tech for each race
>Mining outposts
>Arenas
>Castles
>sky city
Find me a shooter with a more varied representation then.
Yeah UT was great. Unreal was meh.
AVP2 ain't no slouch
there's others, uhhh
Outcast
Jedi outcast??? if you like your s o y wars
Giants: citizen kabuto
MDK is based on heavy metal (the magazine) so it's got some decent variety
modern ones I'd really have to rack my brains
They truly did
It’s real good.
>modern Dumbest Generation kids love a fucking FPS with linear, boring, lazy goddamn storygame gameplay (HL)
>hate an immersive, simplistic out-of-the-way story like it should be game with several open, explorable levels, good weapons, enemies, high action, imagination, and tons of other high-quality perks (Unreal)
You fucking children, I swear to living fuck. And I wonder why modern gaming is a fucking wasteland of garbage. It's because you fucking children wouldn't know a good game if it bit you in the ass.
that's sum of dat "unreal atmosphere" the other user's going on about
the rest of us call it good baked in lighting
fair enough i guess, perhaps it's best played on lower difficulties then to preserve the flow
The games you named, if combined, could have the same variety than Unreal has, but not on their own. What you see in Unreal was unseen and always will be on an fps.
I agree generally speaking, but unreal ain't it, gramps
Yeah, it’s great.
yeah this is nice, though i also like the exteriors, especially the skyboxes
something about unreal really feels like you're on a journey, you get a real sense of travelling great distances and time passing and without those exteriors that'd probably get lost
>Outcast
honestly this is one of the only games i know that comes close to touching the same vibe as unreal
something about it, such a shame it doesnt get more recognition
I might just replay it on easy mode to really BTFO your variety points but the thread's not gonna live long enough and there's no quakebaby strafejumping to speed the jizz slurping slow WALKING I have to do
I played the game recently, not some nostalgia dad talking here. I can enjoy both quack and Unreal strong points with no problem till today, but hey, if that means you will play unreal again, be my guest.
yeah give it another shot maybe you'll like it this time, not shitting on quake btw, i like both
No. Only thing that game had was graphics. It isn't a good game overall.
I'll wait until GMDX guy makes his meme unreal 2.0 mod or whatever it's called
add a fast forward button/host_timescale cheat and I'm in
hell, UT has a gravity mutator, air control and game speed sliders, unreal can use em too
Buy DUSK
fuck off
Yes.
>Game that looks worse and has less detail than anything made on the late 90s
This is not the right thread to shill it.
Clearly you've never played facing worlds ctf with skilled players, the translocator abuse is the stuff ptsd is made of
>Impact Hammer + Shock rifle boost
Those were the days.
It looks like Quake, and I don't think you know what Quake looked like in the 90s.
i finished it and it was great
You're pretty dumb if you think anything on Dusk has the level of quality from the architecture of quake maps. Dusk literally looks like a babies first experimental map pack.
You haven't played Dusk
Goddamn did I love making maps for UT, all the different lighting/texture/skybox options and ai pathing blew my mind back in the day.
I prefer iCTF which has translocators removed by default
CTF-Face is also a shit map
>You haven't played Dusk
I completed EP 1 only, they seem to be stepping their game up but there is still far better looking stuff made for Quake which you can play for free in a much superior base game.
