The name Robotnik was conceived by the western branch outside of Sonic Team's oversight. His name was always canonically Eggman, Robotnik is made up shit. The only reason that was brought up in Sonic Adventure was because the western branch had confused shit so much they were trying to salvage it. Hence other stupid changes they tried to force in, like calling Eggmanland "Robotropolis" in the OVA, and calling Amy "Princess Sally" in the US manual of Sonic CD. Sally is not Amy's nickname, they were trying to pull a fast one. Same shit with Robotnik in Adventure.
