Sakurai left HAL for a moment because he wanted to do something else but Iwata tried to bring him back for smash for Smash Wii U/3DS or "it would be a complete failure without him".

Sakurai agreed to come back but as an external dev. He's part of SORA (his company) and not part of Nintendo's main team even if it mostly means he works for nintendo but no string attached. That means he can talk about other consoles as much as he can and actually criticize nintendo at times.

He has even blown nintendo the fuck out by saying that the Eshop was actually ugly and far from being as good as the playstation Store.
