VR and Vidya in general

recorded sometime in 1996 maybe 1997, I forget

>David Foster Wallace : I'm not saying watching t.v. is bad, or a waste of your time anymore than - like - masturbation is bad or a waste of your time; it's pleasant little way to spend a few minutes - but if you're doing it 20 times day; if your primary sexual relationship is with your hand - something is wrong...

>David Lipsky : Yeah, except with masturbation at least some action is being performed, right; isn't it that, that's better?

>David Foster Wallace : Ok; you can make me look like a real dick if you print this...

>David Lipsky : [laughs] No, I'm not going to - but if you can, speak into the mike...

>David Foster Wallace : Yes, you're performing muscular movements with your hand as you're jerking off. But what you're really doing, I think, is you're running a movie in your head. You're having a fantasy relationship with somebody who is not real... strictly to stimulate a neurological response. So as the Internet grows in the next 10, 15 years... and virtual reality pornography becomes a reality, we're gonna have to develop some real machinery inside our guts... to turn off pure, unalloyed pleasure. Or, I don't know about you, I'm gonna have to leave the planet. 'Cause the technology is just gonna get better and better. And it's gonna get easier and easier... and more and more convenient and more and more pleasurable... to sit alone with images on a screen... given to us by people who do not love us but want our money. And that's fine in low doses, but if it's the basic main staple of your diet, you're gonna die.

>David Lipsky : Well, come on.

>David Foster Wallace : In a meaningful way, you're going to die.

do you agree anons? are we dying alone in a room by playing vidya so much? is anyone addicted to VR?

There will be natural selection, those who want to avoid social interaction will disappear from the genome map, and there will always be poor people breeding as slaves, at least until they riot and society is over as we know it or some great war fucks with our electronics/satelites etc..

People keep thinking USA/CAN+Europe+Japan is the whole world, when the majority of the world is still sub 90 IQ and is not going to trade regular sex for VR ses. What you'll get is more ugly/awkward people happy with their shut in lifestyle and staying outside of the hypergamy trend making most betas miserable.

>are we dying alone in a room by playing vidya so much?
No shit. Who's "we" though? If you're doing that, you're fucking your life up, day by day.

>are we dying alone in a room by playing vidya so much? is anyone addicted to VR?
We just may be.

People always forget the other half of this equation.

Yes, assuming technology progresses unilaterally (which it doesn't, but bare with me), it will ultimately result in people locked inside pleasure boxes.
HOWEVER
Again, assuming tech evolves unilaterally, we will also be controlled by AI that will know how to keep both our individual lives and civilization as a whole running far better and more efficiently than we ever could, and will use those pleasure boxes as both means and incentive to get us to do what needs to be done.
Like The Matrix only instead of providing energy for the robots, we're cleaning toilets, and we won't care.

But this is all, again, assuming technology will be allowed to progress that far, which it won't.

Nice

Virt-a-Mate, probably the best experience you'll get with giantess VR, but it's retarded UI and reliance on creating your own scenes/animations requires big brain.

Wow you really quelled my fears of living in a dystopian society where I have no autonomy.

This.
There is nothing inherently bad about pleasure boxes. In fact, they are by your own brain's definition the best thing that could possibly exist, and arguing against that is only deluding yourself, like claiming that eating and sex don't feel good.

Maybe for some, I dont think a life in porn cube sounds that exciting.

You'll have far *more* autonomy than you have now, honestly.

Instead of working a dead-end job for little pay and squeeking in what good times you can in the middle, you'll work a job you love, having every need cared for, and if you ever want to do something more meaningful, you'll know the exact most efficient method to get that done. Everyone's life will matter in the exact way they want it to.

Everyone dies, no matter what. There is no reason. That's why DFW offed himself

That's sad nigga.

That's fucking stupid.

This.

Also, half you fags are describing A Brave New World with more steps.

the inner ape inside of me is screaming for me to go into debt for a costly vr rig and high end pc

The thing is, in A Brave New World people were coerced through technology to do something they otherwise wouldn't do.
That's not what will happen.
There will be an AI, and that AI will weigh your wants, needs and abilities against the wants, needs and abilities of the entire rest of the population, and fit you in the role that you, yourself would've picked, assuming the best possible circumstances. It will know what you're passionate about and where you'd want to improve in your life, and put you in the exact place to make that happen. It will match you up with other people, and find you a mate with whom you're most compatible. It will know you better than you know yourself, and give you your version of your perfect life, and you won't even notice it happening.

vr will keep flopping till we get to a point we can jack into the matrix

People wouldn't spend their lives in a porn cube if there was a better alternative.

>it will
its happening right now brah

Oh yeah cleaning toilets and changing the oil in Amazon drones sounds like my dream job. And then I get to go home and sit in a box with a nutrient IV in my arm and a tube in my ass to dispose of the waste for exactly 5.3 hours until my Google regulated sleep cycle activates and I'm knocked out with noxious gas. What a fucking wonderful fulfilling life I have ahead of me.

You keep missing the "You'll actually want to do this" part. There won't be any forceful measures taken. There won't have to be.

Someone *will* have to clean the toilets and change the oil, but there will be someone perfectly content to do it, because social mobility and notoriety will be an obsolete concept.

I wouldn't say addicted to VR or video games but I do indulge a lot of time into it where it intrigues me. I think as long as you still hold on to human curiosity you're not lost to the void.

The threat is real as a concern but he was leading more to human connection rather than literal use of tech. Technology does us wonders, how we use it lacks execution and forethought.

Personally I've been fucking with sandbox mods (because what better a playground?) in VR games because it's an unexplored potential we've barely scratched the surface of. The tools are there but we threw it aside as a gimmick rather than a means of formatting a medium.

That sounds like a waking nightmare of endless existential turmoil. I want to make choices in my life, I want to be accountable for my actions, and I want some kind of struggle to propel me upwards. If my entire life is decided and played out for me then what am I but a passive observer of my own boring clinical life?

You're missing the "I don't want to do that" part. It's sounds fucking boring and soul sucking, and as that other user said we're already halfway there at this point and it's causing widespread depression and malaise.

>I want to be accountable for my actions, and I want some kind of struggle to propel me upwards.
You'll still get that, no reason to assume you won't.

Again, you'll get it more than you likely do now, as you'll be freed up to have the time and resources to persue what you're passionate about, instead of slowly wasting away spending every ounce of energy and every dollar you have just to survive.

>we're already halfway there
We're really not. There's a lot that needs to happen first before we get there.
We're basically in the pre-industrial-revolution, 1810s "Ten Year Olds cleaning chimneys for a dime" phase before the 1910s, post-revolution Henry Ford, Assembly Line, Golden Age of Capitalism phase. We *might* see it in our lifetimes if we're extremely lucky, but probably not.

I'll be honest skyrim dismemberment and magic death effect mods shit on this hands down with the new script extender. It's uncanny what you can already do, now just implementing it where you simulate the animations just adds a shitload more depth.

What can I say, Unity can't compete with a 20 year old engine but goddamn if the devs aren't trying.

Augmented Reality =/= VR.
One is a pipe dream. The other is a shilled meme.

This is some grade-A Hopium
Most humans will continue to suffer in middling poverty until our corporate overlords kill us or climate change fucks us.

>do you agree anons?
Completely.

>I'm gonna have to leave the planet
