I like RahXephon, but I wouldn't say it surpassed EVA. Also, Fafner has a REALLY slow start. A start so slow that it lasts for the entirety of the first season. Niether of these have the impact of EVA, but I wouldn't say either are bad.

Shinji rejected instrumentality after experiencing it. Everyone else is still in there. Rei/his mother (I forget) basically states that those who have the will to reject instrumentality can do so now that he has.

I guess Asuka's body lived long enough to be absorbed and then spat out with Shinji, I'm not entirely sure on that part

The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki III ends with the protagonist going berserk after watching one of his friends get brutally murdered by an ancient sacred beast. Afterwards, the protagonist and his giant robot go berserk full Eva 01 style, and starts hacking away at said sacred beast.

After completely butchering the damn thing, a strange miasma begins to emanate from the rotten beast corpse and starts enveloping the land, turning people against each other with fights breaking out pretty much everywhere.

Everything keeps tumbling down before the credits roll, with the miasma going beyond the borders of the empire and a massive world war about to break out.

It was a magnificent despairing end, like no other in the JRPG genre, it was beautiful.

It also gets fucked by the sequel though, but that's Falcom's incompetent writing team for you. To this day I still speculate they must have outsourced Sen III's script, there's no way they could have come up with such a great game on their own.

TTGL was pretty much designed to be the antithesis of Eva. The whole idea behind Eva (at least until it goes completely off the rails) is taking the concept of putting teenagers in extremely dangerous giant robots to fight apocalyptic monsters and applying it to fairly grounded people, so the end result is that almost everyone actually involved with the Evangelions themselves is fucking miserable. TTGL takes that concept and instead challenges itself to see just how absolutely exciting it can make that concept, with a heaping side of "human willpower is the strongest force in the universe" applied in an extremely literal sense. Both are fantastic though and the more mecha you're familiar with the more you can appreciate them because they're all about playing with genre stereotypes.
TTGL has based Viral though so it's better by default
