They made the sort of game longtime fans of the series wanted, rather than pandering to newer, younger fans. That's really all it was.
They made a Sonic game that felt like the ones on the Genesis rather than trying to change the formula yet again.
Because they actually gave a shit, mostly. It's obvious everyone at Sonic Team has checked out and merely use the series as their own personal creative outlet instead of doing what's best for Sonic. You could replace a staggering number of 3D Sonic games with another character and the experience virtually would not change. And let's also not forget Sega's typical mismanagement of the series over the years.

I love how people ignore Takayuki Iizuka having the foresight to hire Christian Whitehead and crew aboard with Mania. He is literally the last vestige of Sonic Team and the only one at SEGA that actually cares about Sonic. Retreating back to HURR DURR REMEMBER THE GENESIS, GUYS?! is fucking boring. Not every modern Sonic game is gonna be 10/10 but I love the weird experimental shit they try with modern Sonic and I like stuff like Unleashed, Colors and Lost World than CTRL Ving Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

To be fair, I think people were just happy that a 2D sonic game actually played right for once in who knows how long. Classic fans had pretty much given up on them ever doing 2D right again after Sonic 4 and Classic Sonic in generations, so I think it just surprised everyone that we finally got a 2D game that actually feels proper for once and we promptly enjoyed it, regardless of the nostalgia pandering. I'm glad because my fondest memories of Sonic were from Dreamcast onward. Seeing that banter between Sonic and Shadow before they fight in SA2 is one of my favorite Sonic moments ever.

Well yeah, I love the comeback of 2D sonic, but I also want a Renaissance of what put 3D Sonic on the map in the first place. It's less of a highly regarded game than Transformed, and from a business standpoint, despite Sonic Drift having been a thing, they found a competent developer who could make Sonic in a car work well.

They tried to with Adventure 1, but they weren't quite there yet. Adventure 2 made it take a bigger back seat due to how the gameplay and stages are designed, but they were still there to an extent. Then they threw it out the window completely with Heroes and never really looked back. You know what's funny? That recent 06 remaster someone was working on has actual weight and physics to Sonic's movement and wouldn't you know it, it actually made the stages feel a bit more enjoyable.
That actually explains why we have a lot of sonyfags here that know fuck all about previous entries in series like spiderman or god of war.

Imo, if there's one thing Boom Wii U did right (I know, I know) is that in their early trailers they showed off Sonic running on water and it actually looked really natural and less static then the official boost games did it, like Sonic was running on a "solid" surface despite being water. The story is fine in both SA1 and SA2. The voice acting was shitty for 1 but was greatly improved in 2. Shitty sound mixing for 2 though. I dont mind the varying gameplay, except for Big in SA1 and some of Tails and Eggman's SA2 levels. Only SADX is terribly bugged, both SA2 and Battle work fine. I believe there was some sort of technical reason why comic sans was used, but I dont recall.

That's primarily because of the Werehog stages, which were absolutely terrible 20-minute slogs that was essentially a Prince of Persia Sands of Time style knockoff with finicky, imprecise "Platforming" elements and braindead combat that played pretty much nothing but that Jazz theme during those sections.
There were also questionable design decisions that plagued even the modern stages, such as random QTE segments that became mandatory in later stages to progress/not die, and mapping the homing attack to the boost button instead of the jump button (meaning there was always a chance of homing near an enemy when meaning to boost, and boosting off the stage when you meant to attack an enemy; this has happened much more than once). Also, MANDATORY collectibles to progress is a horrible design decision for a Sonic game, especially one like Unleashed whos entire purpose is to go FAST.
It did a lot of things right, but there some really painful design choices that dragged the game down. It's still the best looking game in the series though, even to this day.
To anyone who wants the definitive way to play Unleashed, I recommend getting Generations on the PC, and getting the Unleashed mod for PC. You get nearly all of the primary daytime stages of Unleashed without any of the bullshit. Mandatory collectibles and Warehog stages are gone, QTEs are replaced by variable boost ramps, and homing attack is assigned to jump rather than boost, negating the issue above). You also get all of the cool refinements, such as midair tricks and abilities.
The unleashed project is shit and nowhere near as good as the original. Fuck you, you lying shit taste having worthless cum guzzling idiot

I love them both too but there's just some levels and bosses in Mania that really ruin the pace of the game. Heavy Gunner basically being an autoscroller, Press Garden Act 1 being too cramped and the boss being a waiting game unless you go Super, the entirety of Hydrocity and its bosses, Mirage Saloon Act 1 unless you're doing Encore or Knuckles.

I think the general concept of "neon rubberhose characters get involved with government conspiracies" is pretty dumb on its own, but if you want something specific then the whole plot point of Eggman blowing up an entire chunk of the moon as a "harmless threat" to show what the cannon is capable of was pretty stupid, especially when you consider the kind of impact that would actually have on a global scale on top of the fact that it's never even brought up again after that point.
Eggman using the cannon to blow up part of the moon should have been his main goal, instead it's just something that feels like was included because the writers thought it would look cool in a cutscene.

Marble Garden and Ice Cap 1 are the only ones that are iffy for me. Carnival Night is unironically one of the best "casino" levels in the series because it actually has platforming and enemies unlike the other ones that just rely on bumper and pinball gimmicks and slot machines that get boring after your first playthrough. Ice Cap 2 is basically the opposite of 1 and is non-linear as heck. And Launch Base is a great, decently challenging climax zone to the first half of the game.

Even if you can accelerate quickly after using the homing attack, isn't the draw behind Sonic continuous momentum? The homing attack literally kills all your moment, and spin dashing or boosting after the fact still doesn't change that.

I'm not interested in headcanons. My point was that blowing up the moon was stupid both in terms of how it fits in the general plot and how it makes Eggman look stupid because he didn't think blowing a chunk out of the fucking moon would cause any kind of real issue to the planet itself. Of course, we'd never know if this was an actual issue because it's never brought up again after it happens.
The writing just sucks. I've seen lots of people try to fill in SA2's narrative holes with their own headcanons, but I feel like doing that just accentuates how dumb some of the really writing is.

I never grew up with classic 2D. My first sonic game was like most late 20 something SA2 on gamecube. Mania was my first 2D Sonic I beat all the way through and it convinced me to not only go back ot the original trilogy, CD, Advance, fan games, unrelated shit like Freedom Planet etc but even after all those Mania still stands out the most because of how much soul was in it. Generations was what finally got me to buckle down and try 2D sonic but i was glad i did. I was a stupid kid for thinking Adventure was better than 2D as a youngin. The Homing Attack is a necessary evil for making Sonic even work in 3D. The big problem as others have said is Sonic Team refusing to use it as anything but a stop-and-pop, or in cases like Lost World over-complicating everything with a retarded kick move and charged homing attack that go against the very point of the game.

3D Blast is one of those "it's a nice game, but a bad x game" type experiences for me. I like the soundtrack and I like the exploration-based level design. I think the homing attack should have been a base move instead of being stuck to a shield, though. Also having to reacquire flickies if after you/they get hit can be really annoying in later levels.

No it doesn't. Reused stages or not, Mania is a fantastic game. I know it's been said a million times, but it's pretty impressive that a group of fans were able to recreate the feeling of the Sonic trilogy where the actual dev team and its affiliates did not and/or could not.
I didn't ask for mania, and hell I was disappointed by the announcement since I was tired of all these retro revival games, but ever since day 1 I've been hooked.

It's absurd how much the Game Gear and GBA games were skipped over entirely. Had the perfect opportunity, and instead they just use Green Hill again and then copy-pasted Casino Night and Mushroom Hill into 3D with 1:1 layouts but worse physics in Classic.
they are all very annoying after a while, same shit enemies and music.

Sega has literally tried to segregate Classic and Modern and has been doing so since like 2015 or so. It's part of the reason why the community is worse than ever, because you have the Modern fans that feel like they're being attacked by the mere idea that Classic is becoming the bigger thing thanks to Mania.
Then again Sega also tried to make Boom the third part of a trifecta in that branding segregation, and we know how that turned out.

It's incredible how even the most obscure sonic fans know how physics work in a sonic game better than Nu-Sonic Team. There's also that 06 remake someone's working on called P-06 which actually makes the game feel a lot more fun because it removes a lot of the jank and gives the characters actual weight and momentum like it should be.
to be entirely fair, it's not hard to improve upon '06 when it got fucked so hard in development and was met with such a rushed release that even mere tweaks to the LUA code can improve the game to small degrees

DIMPS were ordered to use the Rush engine by Iizuka, rather than try to replicate the original games directly. It's actually really fucking hilarious because if you go and see reviews from Episode 1's time, it was only the fanbase being salty about the physics that downrated the game, as critics loved it. Then Generations came out and people saw how bad it really was, Episode 2 barely improved much at all, and soon enough Mania basically made Sonic 4 look like a dumpster fire.
Well, is it based on Advance? Because I'd be annoyed Modern era characters exist in classic levels, some of which like Shadow and Modern Amy shouldn't exist in.
Imo, I don't really care, but Modern was explicitly designed for 3D in the first place. Most of the issues that came from the 3D games was injected into the Advance games like grinding and Super Sonic being final boss exclusive, which made no sense.
I still remember how much hardy laughter there was in the Mania pre-release threads when that pre-order trailer dropped and there was no 4 on the elevator buttons at all.
I think it had a lot of really good ideas. It's probably the best representation of momentum that 3D sonic has EVER gotten, to be honest. And that fucking soundtrack. Whether it's the Genesis one or the Richard Jacques masterwork. Both are just art.
big corporations have this retarded idea that players need the games to be winned by themselves instead of fucking playing them.
Its far easier to make an engine that works, but they are told that thats something new players will hate or some shit, and thats why there are so many weird engines like lost world and boom.

The fact it's the only game in the series to have you bounce off walls (instead of SA1/2 where you get stuck on them) just cements how talented Traveler's Tales was at game design. I believe if 3D Blast was made when Sonic R was made instead, you'd likely would have gotten a completed Sonic Jam as a game.
SEGAsonic looked neat as hell and I find it weird that they decided to waste an isometric Sonic game on this...and ...labyrinth...and Chronicles.

I don't think Iizuka had anything to do with what was originally intended to be a cheap mobile game being re-branded as a Sonic 3 successor. It used the Rush engine because the team developing it never intended it to play like the classics to begin with.
I want to say the original idea for the project's controls was to be mainly tilt/gyro-based.
If he's talking about Mania the devs never patched out the developers auto boost to the mach state by hitting the "Y" button.
