The only reason I have a low opinion of Tales is that I only played 2 games in the series and loved one of them but hated the other.

Dragon quest > SMT > tales > final
Dragon quest has the advantage of highly charming settings and a bunch of different feeling spins offs.
SMT is fun and I love pet raising games but it is oppressive and instant kill mooks are always annoying (though I understand they are necessary)
Tales has the odd good game.
Ff is mostly flash with no substance.
