I like this game and the characters, but his constant self-doubt during the latter half of the game is annoying.
Simply put, people keep on missing the point. Earthbound's novelty came from it's borderline surreal random aspect of it's world. But it was made with that intent to represent a world from the eyes of children. Or rather the purest concept of the idea of kids going on an adventure.
Now most modern indie devs only see the random aspect of it and thinks that's what made it sell. Which is why they keep on churning out these "Woah! So whimsical and wackyXD" RPGs with little to no explanation on why shit be the way they are.

Most EB "inspired" game's are just "weird." UT and Lisa are the only good ones, and mostly because they're their own games that share some humor and visual cues.

You can make a shit character who doesn't grow or change, but the audience needs a hook (an interesting situation, a worthwhile mystery, surprises, something) and an anchor (a character or just a narrative tone you either find investment in or empathize with). If the audience gets no feedback from any source that, yes, this person is contemptible, they just get annoyed and leave. Instead of repeating annoying things over and over, you should establish them well once and then spice it up from there. If Alex has one long, drawn out conversation in his own head and the next time a character just notices him mumbling at length seemingly incoherently to himself, you've established the premise. From there you play theme and variation off of it, finding new ways to make it a punchline or subvert expectations.

J&tPM is arguably more postmodern than yuk and doesn't mind leaning in on the influence from the clear inspiration. It even goes further with interesting mechanics, rewards for creative attempts, and exploratory storytelling (despite the derivative nature).
If more titles like that were developed using yuks low poly that might make for some cooler indie RPG releases. A low poly remake of just Mother3 with a different narrative would be good. Implement normal attacks with the rhythm battles, rolling health and defend slowing it, and then tack the QTEs or minigames to specials. Then make some special attacks contextual or limit break like so that they play out like the cinematic specials in CC2 games.

As a result, he's a bad and in theory quite unlikeable person but a good an dmemorable character. If you wanna make your protagonist an unlikeable scumbag, you need to give some sort of solid metareason to justify why you'd want to stick around and play as him for longer than 5 minutes.
