It was building for a while, but I think III and especially IV are when it got laughable. In I/II the models were still simple enough that they didn't do anything too ridiculous.

All three trails in the sky games, both of the trails of cold steel games that have been localized are all out on steam and GOG. Zero and Ao can also be played on PC with fan translations that include japanese voice acting for all dialogue. You can also patch the trails in the sky games to have all dialogue voiced in japanese

Jenis had no pretense of being anything but a normal high school, though, and it didn't shoehorn any modern pop culture elements into the setting. The centerpiece of its arc was a hokey school play about knights backed by pipe organ music. There were no rock bands or idol group performances.

Jenis was a single chapter in Joshua and Estelle's journey. Fuck it wasn't even a chapter, it was like 1/4th of the chapter. Most of it was spent running around Ruan and that nearby small village. It was a nice cool change of pace, the concert kickstarted Estelle's romantic feelings toward Joshua, and it fleshed out Kloe a good amount too.
Thors is stupid as fuck because both Liberl and Crossbell arcs hype up Erebonia to be a militaristic nation, and yet we step into a military academy and it's a high school ripped straight from a shitty seasonal anime. You also spend the entire fucking game there.

Kondo is doing everything possible to retcon Joshua x Estelle. Fuck their couple victory animation in CS4 is them fistbumping, while Rean and Alisa of all people hold hands in theirs.
Guy is a complete fucking hack and I wish they'd just give up on the series.

I mean, it technically goes back even further than that.
I remember when I first started trying to get into this series thanks to Estelle posting, and the absolute bafflement I felt. Every new link and even every new sentence on wikipedia was a new wrinkle to this winding madness that has apparently been going on in Japan since the dawn of video games, possibly being the origin of multiple entire genres.
When I got to the branching path of this franchise that doesn't release a game more frequently than 10 years apart, and the most release of which is a sequel to an N-Gage exclusive of all things, and is also apparently a complete re-imagining in a present day setting, was one of the moments I had to stop and take some time to process again.

Well, it's gone as an actual setting for most of the game. I never said the vibe of a school setting was gone though.

I tried the first one.
I liked the atmosphere, art and characters but the combat and music were really irritating.
The combat is too slow and trying to look more tactical than it is.

If the combat actually gets fun I'll give it another whirl.
