I believe the context behind the image would be the results of the conversion between Samus and the X parasite from Metroid fusion. While in-game we never actually see what Samus looked like during the surgery to remove her armor, it was noted that much of her body was being rapidly hijacked by the X parasite, until the metroid antidote was given to her.

Based on the attire seen in the image, it's most likely a conceptual image of Samus had her original figure not healed and she ended up keeping the X Parasite features.

After beating Samus Returns i gotta say im not too fond of the idea that the Chozo are behind a lot of the things in the Metroid series.
If you take it at face value the Chozo used the X parasite to conquer Sr388 and were the "creators" of the metroids which are the whole thing why this series exists.
It feels a bit too convenient that the most enigmatic race have such deep ties to the most important events in the series, whats next? They hired Ridley which would make them indirectly responsible for the death of Samus parents?

Either way, I always got the impression that it was a situation that could escalate out of control, it was kind of a small event in a big universe. We didn't even see the Federation until a few games in, and with the Prime games it's kind of implied that there's world-destroying stuff all over the place and the Chozo, who were the previous galaxy-spanning empire, was basically plugging any seals they found but they were all coming loose.
