If anyone actually says Epic "is not competition" then I don't agree with them. Obviously Epic is competing with Steam. It's just not the kind of competition which is actually going to benefit people who buy games, at least not directly. Competition is good for consumers when multiple companies are selling the same product or service, because this competition provides an incentive for each company either to lower prices or to increase quality of service.

Epic Games, meanwhile, is competing by paying publishers and developers not to sell their games anywhere else. This isn't going to benefit people who buy games because Epic, having exclusive control over these specific games, has no incentive to lower their prices or to increase their quality of service in any other way. They know people need to come to their store to get these specific games right now, so the people who buy games are not seeing any of the usual benefits of competition. If you think of an individual game as a commodity, rather than video games as a whole being the commodity, then Epic has monopolies on several of those games. In this sense, it is true that Epic is not competing, at least not fairly. They obviously are a competitor in the game retail market, but again, it's not the kind of competition which benefits customers directly.

Of course, all of the above assumes that their customers are the people who buy games. There's another way of looking at it, which is that their customers are actually the publishers and developers. Epic is really competing for their attention. That's why everything Epic does benefits the publishers and developers, not the people who actually buy their games. The same could be said of Steam's business model, of course. In a way, the publishers and developers are Steam's customers, while gamers are the commodity. In that sense, making exclusivity deals with publishers and developers seems like a fair tactic... but only Epic is currently doing it.

This has always been my confusion on the topic. The argument that it always boils down to is people saying the epic game store is going to force steam to improve and will take away it's monopoly. Like Epic will stop paying for exclusivity deals if it becomes as popular as steam. There is literally no indication that Epic will not form a monopoly if this works out in there favor. They will buy every AAA release and a HUGE host of indie games as those small or even single dev teams would probably take literally any dollar amount past 5 or 6 figures thrown at them. Not only that they will have no reason to improve their own platform because guess what they aren't catering to consumers they are catering to publishers the money won't be spent on R&D for the launcher it will be spent on buying the next exclusive, and then the next exclusive. The epic games store will always be the shitty form it's in now and then it'll be too late to go back to steam because everything will be exclusivity contracted to Epic. People just seem to like to eat their own foot these days if it makes them unique and against the tide.

The third is actually very large, possibly larger than the first, but you can easily prevent them from hurting sales by providing a good service and throwing in a few anti-piracy roadblocks; doing this is what allowed Steam to become as big as it is today, and not providing comparable services is going to cost Epic. The fourth is literally a boycott, only they're more likely to stick to their word and not cave, it's arguable whether you can simply claim this is an issue of piracy harming sales when a good portion of them would have pirated or boycotted anyway.

I fit under these, I used to just pirate games but with steam it was convenient after ~2010 because I didn't have to track down the millions of patches modern games needed to be playable. but I gotta say, for point 3, anti piracy roadblocks were never relevant, I always waited for cracks when it was convenient to pirate, don't really play games on release anyway, never really did either because when a game releases I'm already playing at least 2 games.

With the whole epic launcher debate I try my hardest to not sound like a coorporate dicksucker who fondles gabens balls, because I swear to god I have my gripes with steam, but fuck the epic store and its blatant, unashamed anti-consumerism methods. Competition is supposed to be good for the consumer, wasn't that how it was supposed to work. If your business model is making the entire video game landscape shittier as a whole, fuck you.
