How comes it that AoE 2 is so well remembered while AoE 1 and 3 comparatively aren't? Why was it so popular?

because AoE released before multiplayer RTS really took off and AoE3 's removal of micro and introduction of meta-progression made the multiplayer significantly less fun

that's what I meant by removing micro. The way villagers work in 3 made the skill gap between good and mediocre players smaller because you no longer had to babysit your vils to make sure they were gathering efficiently

AoE 1 was good and popular when it was released, but the amount of QoL and upgrades that AoE 2 brought made 1 a purely inferior version.

3 was completely different beast and the gameplay was just not that good.
