Echoes has very good aesthetics but the gameplay is extremely dated, and very different from the rest of the series. It's quite grind heavy in the non-skippable way. If you have played other games you should be fine but as your first game you shouldn't take it as a sample case.
The best place to start is the GBA games, namely Sacred Stones or Fire Emblem (7). On the gamecube Path of Radiance is also a good start and easy to emulate. I personally like Shadow Dragon a lot for personal bias but many dislike it, it's a great place to get good at Fire Emblem. I personally feel Awakening is best enjoyed after playing a few other games, specially Shadow Dragon and New Mystery for you get all the references.

As a new player, the best entries to start with are Sacred Stones or Blazing sword(called Fire Emblem in the USA)
From there, you can go forward to the tellius series(path of radiance>radiant dawn) or back to the SNES games.
The NES titles aren't worth playing anymore, as 3 remade 1 better, and shadows of valencia remade 2.
Personally, I'd avoid shadow dragon and new mystery of the emblem(the DS titles). I'm not a fan of awakening, but it's okay. I'm also not a fan of 4 and 5, but they have their fans so w/e.

shadow dragon is shit, and MU ruins mystery of the emblem. As for 4 and 5, hidden stats that determine whether or not a unit is good is not good game design. Crusader scrolls is not good game design. requiring planning out genes in order to have playable units is not good game design.
the maps are good, and the story is decent, but kaga emblem is not good FE.
