I have finished, I think half of the route in Little Busters and not a single one has made me cry yet. In fact, I have felt nothing. Some character routes have even been outright bad.

The characters are fine. I actually like all of them. But their routes just feel bland. The common route might even be the best out of any Key VN I have read so I don't know what's changes when character routes start.

I also thought that the VN was going for a twist where after finishing the last route, the team would finally win in the baseball match. But nah, that happened after some routes and that's it. Nothing really special happened. Yay, they won.

Hopefully at least one of the routes makes me cry.

Had anything good come out in the last two years or so? I dropped out of VNs for a while and I don't think there were any particularly huge releases anyway, I probably would have heard. It's still mainly a novel but some of the battles are actually pretty challenging even on normal difficulty. You need to use the right items for the right units and move them strategically or you're fucked in some of the boss fights.

VNs are games too. Kamidori Alchemy Meister has the most complex crafting system I've ever seen in a game and it's still just a VN.

But if it's a romantic game where the whole story is about a girl, porn is useful because all-ages games usually end at the first kiss and rarely have any of the lovey dovey being lovers content.

I did try it. It's currently on hold on chapter 4 but i haven't dropped it. At first I just downloaded the demo to fool around but turns out it was interesting enough for me to buy it even though that wasn't the plan at all.

If you're considering buying I would particularly recommend though it wasn't a huge success or anything. If you can read JP download the demo, it has the entire first chapter which is actually quite a lot of content.

Its a nice concept, but it completely blows it, ignoring any of the writing standards to set it up. From simple shit like the reveal of true assissin having some wind magic resistance when it is most needed. To major pacing issues.

And even the characters arent particularly good. Like why does shirou in heavens feel suddenly patrol the streets with saber while in fate he forced her to teach him? Why does the grandpa do nothing in the other routes? Why does the whole fate route only resolve saber and leave shirou hanging, with no clear finish to high arc, other than wanting to fuck saber in the afterlife? hell, at ifrst I thought he was supposed to become archer until it was stated by nasu it wasnt the case. Only in UBW does he get a conclusion to his arc, and then saber is left hanging as she just kind of resolves at the sideline she should give up. In heavens feel every character that got an arc resolved in fate or UBW gets killed casually. Same with caster in fate, she almost gets excuse killed just to make sure she has a place in fate.

It had a few great moments, I liked the arc of medea, I liekd the ending of fate, I liked lancer in UBW, but for most part it was too long, padded text that shouldve seen an editor, and character inconsistencies or just plain boring characters.

a lot of VN translations happened recently. Very few amateur groups were dedicated enough to see through an entire VN translation project. Its way longer and more tiring than scanlation of subbing.

And just because only a few gems of the past were translated doesnt mean the past was a sea of perfect VNs.

A good VN with different routes explores different sides of the story.

Even if you accept that a bunch of characters change their personality and get discarded early to open up the way for the main characters of a route. The characters still arent particularly interesting.

There's definitely a decrease in releases in Japan when compared to the early 2000s, especially when it comes to plot focused VNs. If you check monthly releases it's mostly dominated by moege and nukige, and what's becoming increasingly popular is single heroine games, probably because they're cheaper to make and safer.
Interesting games still release from time to time though, I'm looking forward to Kanoseka this month.

I think it also allows you to better carve out your niche. Like if you make a moege with 5 girls that costs 50 bucks someone who is interested in 2 girls has to waste 30 bucks. If you instead make 5 games with 1 girl that costs 10 bucks people can pick what they want. This means you waste less on routes people dont want. YOu can make a fandisk of a sidegirl that was popular if you really need to.
