3, 4, and 5 all have different main characters but I have no idea about 2 as someone who only played 5 Switch with the free dlc that lets you get the other main characters.

Gameplay wise, the series becomes better in the latter entries.
Character and story wise (which is a huge point that keeps you interested in the silly disgaea world), the series peaked with the first one and it was all downhill from there.

I would suggest you to start with 1, enjoy the best story. Coming back to 1 later is hard after you played the more refined games

The stories of each game aren't particularly connected, but the plot and characters of the first game tend to cast a long shadow over the franchise, so if you have to start with any of them, it's probably best to start with that one. Aside from that, you can skip whichever ones you want and play them in whatever order you want. Just be a aware that while the core gameplay doesn't evolve much over the series, each game introduces a ton of more minor features and quality-of-life changes, such that it makes going back to earlier ones pretty frustrating. Hell, in the original release of the first game, you couldn't even skip skill animations.

Start with Disgaea 1 on PC or the Vita version of Disgaea 4. Those two are generally considered the best. D1 having the best story and characters, while D4 has the best gameplay and still really good story and characters.

The only games having more than a passing connection are a bunch of main characters from Disgaea 1 being very vital to the plot of Disgaea 2 and Disgaea Dimensions 2 being a sequel story to Disgaea 1. Other than those you can play the others at any point, there are a handful of references and characters from other games in all of them, but those aren't really vital to understanding anything, they are mostly just fun little nods, pure fanservice.
